Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon says the steeply rising price of food has developed into a global crisis. He says the U.N.-sponsored meeting in Bern must find solutions to a problem that is increasing poverty, hunger and instability in the world. The ed Nations estimates about 100 million of the world's poorest people cannot afford to buy food. Because of the spiraling costs, the World Food Program says its original budget for this year is not enough to feed all the hungry. It is appealing for an additional three quarters of billion to meet the extra expenses. The U.N. refugee agency says millions of refugees and internally displaced people will be particularly hard hit by skyrocketing food prices. Spokesman, Ron Redmond, says most of these people are totally dependent on food donations from the international community. This kind of dramatic price increases can also trigger instability, particularly in poor countries and this is of great concern to UNHCR as well, because we are aly seeing this happening in several countries," said Redmond. "Of course, the possibility could be eventual increased displacement should it trigger further conflict and instability in those countries." The Food and Agriculture Organization warns sharp rises in cereal prices have left 37 poor countries in an emergency situation. This has sparked food riots in many countries including Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Egypt and Senegal. The meeting in Bern will also address the impact of climate change on food production and explore ways to help poor countries adapt to these changes. The growing controversy over bio-fuels is also on the agenda. Critics argue that the cultivation of crops for bio-fuels is taking good land away from food production and causing prices to rise. Some people are calling for a moratorium on the production of bio-fuels. The U.N. meeting is expected to come up with a plan of emergency measures to solve the immediate global food crisis. Participants also will begin to address the longer-term problems. 200804/36935。

  • It was much better than I thought it would be. It would be a bit worried about the way they portray Japan and the geishas in general. But it was pretty well done, pretty authentic, there you couldn't hear a pin drop in the theatre. (What?)They've really kept the audience's time. David, there is a little bit of controversy surrounding this film, and why don't you lay it around forth who is upset about this film and why?Well, some of the Japanese are upset, only because their own actresses were not used. But the reason for that is A, there weren't enough powerful actresses who would fit the role, who could also speak English enough that would be easy to understand. And that, you know,I mean that's just a fact, so there is nothing you can do about that. The other issue is that some of the Chinese people who are somewhat nationalistic in nature, are upset that...that Chinese actresses would cross over to the Japanese side(Yeah.) and participate in such a Japanese film. And in a way, you know, right now there's a lot of political fiction, but in a way, the movie did, uh, beautify the Geishas to the extent that all the men were decent people, everybody was kind to each other basically. But in reality, I mean, you had er... during the war, the comfort women issue, which of course is not mentioned, even though there are many war scenes. There is a war's period during the movie, of course that's not even mentioned. And none of the men were particularly ,ur,what you would call crude or mean.(Yeah. Really.) So when you go back into history, especially if you're a Chinese or Korean rather from other parts of Asia, people have such vivid memories of Japanese activities during the war(Yeah.) that they might find the movie yield a little bit too soft, in those areas.Well, David let me ask you one last question, if you're an American audience, this is... this is coming from an American book by an American author. I would think it is being made by an American director primarily, principally for the American film going audience. How much should we care about the... this controversy? I would say that there is nothing to be concerned about(yeah.) when you think about the American audience, they will love it, they will like it. It's epic Oscar type of movie, and the historical era during the war, I don't think will be issues, not really that well known. (right)The Geisha world itself is such a non-known entity to Americans, they'll find it very enticing and mysterious, you know. For Japanese, of course, it's no bother really,so, it is a different approach to the movie, but I think I should say it's really made for the American audience. And I don't think they'll have any problem with the fact that Chinese acters are playing it. As a matter of fact, no one in the theatre really seemed that was unnatural after about five minutes and everybody speaks English.(Yeah.) And half of them being Chinese, after a while, it really made absolutely no difference at all, (ok)overall enjoyment of the movie. 200807/45201。

Grocery stores in Hong Kong have replenished rice supplies after panic buying nearly cleared the shelves. Concern is growing among Asian consumers that the region's staple food will no longer be affordable for low-income families. The rush for rice in Hong Kong began after wholesale prices spiked in Thailand. At the end of February, Thailand's benchmark rice was trading at more than 0 a ton, an increase of more than 0 from a month earlier. And in recent days, the price has risen further - more than 30 percent. Hong Kong imports 90 percent of its rice from Thailand, and relies on imports for most of its food. Consumers, expecting sharp price rises, in the past several days have loaded up on rice, clearing the shelves of some stores. Jasmine Hui is spokeswoman for Park-n-Shop, one of Hong Kong's largest food retailers. She says the chain has increased delivery volume for rice to meet consumer demand. Hui says shoppers in Hong Kong should not be concerned just yet that they will have to pay more for rice. Although we are really facing much pressure as a result of the increase in cost price for rice recently, and we do try our best to stabilize the retail price and up till now we have not adjusted the retail price for all our rice products," she said. Smaller crops and other factors such as higher fuel costs have contributed to rising prices for rice. Analysts are concerned about what that means for social stability. Some of the region's poorer nations, with inefficient markets and distribution systems, could face shortages, and millions of households could struggle to pay for basic food. This week's rush on rice shows that even wealthy cities such as Hong Kong, where markets are efficient and most people can afford alternative foods, are vulnerable to fears about shortages and inflation. Robert Broadfoot is director of the Political and Economic Rick Consultancy in Hong Kong. He says the actual increase in food prices is only a part of the problem when looking at how social unrest and food stability are connected. He says it is just as important to look at how governments control distribution. In a number of places they've imposed subsidies so that there are shortages in some countries that have run out, where the food is too cheap," he said. "In other countries like the Philippines, government's in charge of doing most of the imports of the rice, so the government is blamed since it's really part of the industry when things go wrong." Broadfoot says in poorer countries soaring prices and rice shortages could hit the urban poor hard. "And urban poor are a group of people that in a lot of countries will demonstrate," he said. "And when they demonstrate, what does that do to the social and political situation of that country?"To avoid public discontent, many Asian governments have taken steps to make sure their citizens have enough rice. Some, such as the Philippines, are rushing to sign contracts for rice imports, and others, including Vietnam and India, have moved to restrict exports. 200804/33530。
