There are certain sets of circumstances, should you ever find yourself in them, where the most reasonable course of action is to reflect on what a good life it been and prepare to check out. We all like to hear nail-biting stories of those who beat the odds and managed to overcome certain death, but these stories are of course highly statistically unlikely—that why it called ;certain death;.As the following people, they decided that statistics be damned, they werent going to be one. These average, everyday people found themselves in situations that are normally only survived by waking up from the nightmare, yet theyre still with us today… and with some pretty harrowing tales to tell. Michelina Lewandoska--Survived: Being buried alive. Michelina Lewandoska, a Polish emigrant to the U.K., described a British court in January of the terror she felt as she lay buried in the ground, her hands and feet bound, in a taped-up cardboard box, slowly suffocating: ;During my time inside my shallow grave where I was buried alive I feared that my life was at an end and I was going to die… I prayed to God to help me to survive so that I could look after my young son.; The referred to her then 3 year-old son she shared with fiance Marcin Kasprzak—the man who had buried her. After having grown ;bored; of Michelina, Kasprzak and his younger friend Patryk Borys hatched a plan to get rid of her. Marcin attacked her with a stun gun, once to get her to the ground and once ; a long period;; he and his friend then bound her wrists and ankles and tied her up, apparently trying to figure out what to do next several hours—bee finally stuffing Michelina into a cardboard box and driving off into the wilderness, to bury her alive under four inches of earth and a 90 pound tree branch. Incredibly, Michelina used her engagement ring to cut loose of her bonds as she was buried in the shallow grave, then claw her way out. She had difficulty walking and breathing weeks after the attack, and doubtless still has nightmares; but on her testimony, her attackers were both sentenced to years in prison. 荷莉·顿--幸存于:;铁路杀手;的攻击(唯一的幸存者)When Holly Dunn and her boyfriend Chris Maier were approached by a strange looking man asking money late on the night of August 9, 1997, they were a little spooked—and they had every reason to be. The man name was Angel Resendiz, and at the time he had aly killed six people and would go on to kill many more.1997年8月9日的深夜,当荷莉·顿和她的男友克里斯·梅尔被一个奇怪的陌生人接近要钱时,他们有点吓着了--这并不奇怪,那个男人名叫安杰尔·雷森迪斯,在当时已经杀了6个人,并准备继续大开杀戒Resendiz found the couple chatting by some train tracks a few blocks away from a party they had just come from. Producing an ice pick, he was able to get both Holly and Chris tied up and stashed in a ditch; after repeatedly checking to make sure he had not been seen, he returned to bludgeon Chris to death with a 50 pound rock. Holly was then raped, stabbed in the neck with the ice pick, and beaten so severely she was practically unrecognizable, at which point she mercifully passed out. After awaking to find her attacker gone, Holly dragged herself to the nearest house, and was taken to the hospital with a shattered eye socket and broken jaw among many other injuries. She was able to recover, and testified against Resendiz at the trial that saw him convicted and sentenced to death—a sentence that was carried out in . Angel Resendiz, the ;Railway Killer; murdered at least people over years—and Holly Dunn is the only one of his victims to survive. Alcides Moreno and his brother Edgar were window washers, and they worked together on Manhattan high rise buildings years. The job obviously carries certain risks, and in December those risks became horrifying reality as the rig they were working on became disengaged and plummeted 7 stories—almost 500 feet—into an alleyway. Firefighters arrived to find Edgar deceased and his brother Alcides alive, CONSCIOUS—and sitting up. Investigators theorize that Alcides was able to sort of ;ride; the platm, using it to help slow his descent, and his doctors noted that he did not hit his head or break his pelvis upon landing—the two things most likely to cause fatal complications in such a fall. Alcides was rushed to the emergency room that day with injuries to his spine and brain, shattered limbs, fractured ribs—in short, everything you would expect to see in someone who just fell 500 feet onto the pavement, except the lack of a pulse.Doctors expected his recovery to take a year or more, but he was pretty much recovered—and making the rounds on morning talk shows—by June. Alcides days as a window washer are over, but his days of life should be plentiful, to the astonishment of literally everyone. Moreno lead doctor said that falls from three stories and above are very difficult to survive, and that Alcides treatment had taken his team into new medical territory: ;Above ten stories, most of the time we never see the patients,; he said, ;because they usually go to the morgue.;调查者推论阿尔西德斯当时以某种方式;骑;着平台,通过平台辅助减缓自己的下落速度,而他的医生发现他落地时头部未受撞击,股盆也未破碎--这两个地方受创是这种坠落情况下最易致命的并发症阿尔西德斯当天立即被送往急救室,他脊柱和头部皆受伤,四肢摔断,肋骨骨折--一句话,所有刚从500英尺高空中跌落到人行道上的一个人该有的伤他都有,但他却奇迹般的活着医生们估计他的伤势需要一年或一年以上才能痊愈,但他很快就恢复了--并且于次年6月份在晨间脱口秀上做客阿尔西德斯作为窗户清洗工的日子终结了,但他个人的正常生活并未终结,确实让每个人都为之震惊莫雷诺的主治医生说从3层及以上的楼层掉落的人都很难幸存,而阿尔西德斯的案例则把他的队伍带向了新的医学领域:;我们通常很难看见从层楼以上坠落的伤员,;他说,;因为他们通常会被直接送往停尸间;7.Ken Henderson--Survived: Being stranded at sea after boat sank7. Longtime friends Ken Henderson and Ed Coen were on a fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico in March when their 30-foot boat started to fill up with water. Henderson tried to pump some of the water out, but it had taken them too long to notice—salt water sprayed everywhere, killing the pumps. There was no response on their radio, no signal on Henderson cell phone—and just after grabbing some life jackets and a few supplies, the boat vanished beneath them into the ice-cold water. And there they remained, over 30 hours. They talked to keep each other distracted, huddled together to conserve body heat, and fought fatigue, dehydration and the bitter cold as long as they could. Henderson decided to make a last ditch eft—a solo swim toward a distant oil rig—when it became apparent that Coen, a slender man, was having serious trouble.Ken almost didnt make it. He became disoriented and almost got off course, and began hallucinating trees made of ice under the surface of the water. After finally stumbling aboard the rig at two in the morning, a day and a half after and 50 miles from where their boat sank, Ken was able to find a galley with a phone and call his wife, who alerted the Coast Guard. It was they who discovered Ed Coen lifeless body a short time later, but there would have been two bodies to find if not not Ken Henderson valiant eft. 6.Richard Moyer--Survived: Black bear attack in his home6. Richard Moyer began the morning of October 3, , like any other. He got up to let out his dog Brindy, who dashed off into the Pennsylvania woods surrounding their home, but as he turned to go back into the house, Brindy returned—hurriedly and unexpectedly. With a gigantic black bear chasing her. This bear really, really hated Brindy and anyone involved with her. It literally broke down the door and stormed into the house after the dog, attacking Richard and waking up his wife Angela. She tried to intervene, and quickly discovered that stopping a bear attack is a bit of a double edged sword, as the bear turned on HER. This prompted the dog to leap onto the attacking animal, and Richard Moyer to shrug his shoulders and do what any husband would: ;What are you going to do? I kept my head down and just leapt into the bear,; he said. And that when the bear got REALLY mad.It mauled the hell out of him, chewed on his head a little while, and then—amazingly—simply stopped, went out onto the front porch and sat down. While the damage from the bear claws was extensive, the gnaw job on the back of Richard head required 37 staples to close. Husband and wife were both home from the hospital by the end of the day, probably eager to tell the story to their year-old son—who had slept through the whole thing.

Lesson : Out on the Ferry Lesson : Out on the Ferry Leo: Just follow me. Leo: Where would you like to sit? Leo: Inside or outside? Jack: Where do you recommend? Leo: Outside. Leo: There’s a much better view. Leo: Watch your step. Page of 8 Leo: Be careful of the ropes. Leo: What about here? Jack: This looks fine. Leo: Are you comtable, Ms White? Mona: Fine, thanks. Leo: Can I get you anything? Mona: I’m right, thanks. Leo: Just follow me. Where would you like to sit? Inside or outside? Jack: Where do you recommend? Leo: Outside. There’s a much better view. Leo: Watch your step. Be careful of the ropes. What about here? Leo: Are you comtable, Ms White? Leo: Can I get you anything? Mona: I’m right, thanks. Leo: Be careful of the ropes. Watch your… Watch your step. Watch your back. Mind your…. Mind your foot Mind your head. Be careful. Be careful of the ropes. Be careful of the water. Leo: Are you comtable, Ms White? Leo: Can I get you anything? Leo: Are you comtable? Leo: Are you comtable? Can I get you anything? Can I get you anything? 566。

  5. KV5. KVWhy do so many astronomical objects have annoying names? Luckily, this comet was nicknamed ;Drac,; after Dracula—due to his ability to walk on walls—which is much easier to say. What does walking on walls have to do with a comet? Well, Drac was the first trans-Neptunian object discovered to orbit the Sun backward—albeit slowly, taking 3 years. (We still dont quite see the link to walking on walls, either.) While there were aly a few objects known to orbit the Sun backward—you may have heard of Halley Comet—they get very close to the Sun in their orbit. Drac, however, never gets any closer than roughly times the distance from the Sun to Earth—equal to the orbit of Uranus. This means that the comet could be the missing link between objects like Halley Comet and other debris in the far-out Oort Cloud of comets past Pluto, helping to explain their mation, which is currently a mystery to science. There are many ideas out there attempting to explain why the orbit of Drac is so unlike almost all others. One of the most interesting prospects is that it might not have med together with our solar system at all—otherwise it would orbit in the same direction as everything else. It is entirely possible that the comet could have gotten trapped in our solar system from interstellar space, providing us with an unprecedented amount of inmation about the cosmos. Triton.特里同While it isnt a household name, some of you have probably heard of Triton bee. But hear us out—there is more than meets the eye with this fantastic specimen. Comprising more than 99 percent of all the mass known to orbit Neptune, it as if all the gas giant awe was condensed into one moon. As shown by the Voyager probe in 1989, Triton is rare among known moons in that it is geologically active: Volcanoes pepper the surface, but they do not spew ash and lava when they erupt, like those on Earth. Instead, they spew water and ammonia. Being just a bit smaller than our own Moon, Triton is the only large moon in the solar system to orbit backward. Also, being one of the largest known moons in our solar system—larger than Pluto—it has just enough gravity to support a thin atmosphere. Seriously thin. With surface air pressure 50,000 times lower than that of Earth, you couldnt fly a kite on Triton surface. Yet, incredibly, Voyager photographed clouds flying just a few kilometers above the surface. Finally, Triton is one of the most reflective objects known to science, reflecting 60–95 percent of all light that hits it. To put that into perspective, the Moon—which is able to cast shadows on Earth at night—reflects only percent. Weve mentioned Saturn a few times so far, but it is certainly an incredibly interesting place. While the planet is known its staggering ring system, only recently did we find out just how far it extended out into space. In , we discovered an enormous ring around Saturn, the farthest and largest band around the ringed world. The ring is tilted 7 degrees from the main rings and starts roughly 8 times the planet radius from its surface, extending to times its radius into space. It is so diffuse that it can only be detected in infrared, but it may be the reason behind the two-toned moon, Iapetus. Saturn moon Phoebe orbits within the ring and at the same inclination, so it is very likely that it is the culprit. Dust disperses from Phoebe and falls onto the larger Iapetus, which orbits on the edge of this colossal new ring. Every time Iapetus passes through it, matter collects on its equator. After hundreds of thousands of years, this matter seems to have built up, creating the moon striking appearance. Now it is just a question of whether it is black with white stripes or white with black stripes. The moons Janus and Epimetheus are known as the ;Siamese moons,; because they share the same orbit and are separated by only 50 kilometers (31 mi)—that less than the radius of the moons themselves. Because of this, they are locked in a gravitational tango that causes them to literally swap places every four years. Due to their complex relationship, they will never crash into each other. Originally, scientists were puzzled as to why data did not match their expectations of the moon they had named ;Janus.; In 1978, years after the discovery of their common orbit, we realized that what we had called Janus was actually two separate moons. This was confirmed by the Voyager flyby in 1980. Interestingly, a faint ring of dust is present in the region of their orbits. This suggests that the two moons were once a single larger one that has since broken up, leaving behind trace amounts of rubble. After taking a look at stuff way out there in our solar system, let head home to Earth and discuss the largely disputed matter of our planet second moon. Since 186, astronomers have been searching a second moon of Earth. Frederic Petit was the first to claim he had found one. He proposed that it orbited Earth in less than three hours at just kilometers (7 mi) above our planet surface. Ever since, many other astronomers have claimed to find a second moon—but to no avail. However, there is one weird exception. Cruithne is an alien asteroid that orbits the Sun in 36 days, with perfect resonance to that of Earth. This means that, a short time every year, the 5-kilometer (3 mi) asteroid is part of the Earth system. It reaches its closest point to Earth every November. Technically, it does not count as a moon, since it leaves Earth. But it still nice to think that every year, an alien object comes to visit. 1877A mother and daughter are facing incest charges in the state of Oklahoma after authorities learned they were legally married earlier this year. It is unclear what motivated Patricia Ann Spann, 3, and her daughter, Misty Velvet Dawn Spann, 5, to wed. Under state law, marriage to a close relative is considered incest, regardless of whether a sexual relationship exists. Investigators also found Patricia Spann married her son in .
