For months I hinted that I needed a new wedding ring, since I had developed an allergy to gold. On my birthday, while I was gardening, my husband asked me for gift suggestions. I held my hands up and said, ;Well, you#39;ll notice that my hands are bare.; Later that evening I opened my present with enthusiasm. ;Happy birthday,; he said, as I unwrapped a new pair of gardening gloves. /201210/205782The day the power went off in Delhi and northern India, I was at home in Bangalore, a city that fortunately escaped the blackout. It brought back memories of my student days in Kolkata, a city then (in the 1980s) notorious for its power cuts. Eight or 10 hours without electricity were de rigueur. The fan would stop working at night: at 38C and 90 per cent humidity, this meant no sleep until the power came back. We would gather outside, talking in groups, varying our routine by walking to the highway that ran alongside our campus, where dhabas served tea (and stronger stuff) all night. 高速公路边的Dhaba(印度公路旁边的餐馆——译者注)通宵供应茶水(以及一些更带劲儿的饮品)。 Even now, many villages have electricity for only four to six hours a day and some still have no power at all. As a student, I awoke when the fan went off. On the other hand, peasants wake themselves up when the lights come back, to use the tubewells that irrigate their fields. Indians have long been used to erratic power supply; yet the recent outages were special, spectacular in their scale and impact. Twenty one out of 28 states were without power for long stretches. Some 600m Indians were affected. It is not yet clear what caused the collapse. With the monsoon having failed, it is far hotter and drier than is usual at this time of year, driving the rich to use more air conditioning and peasants to rely more heavily on their tubewells. In the rush to satisfy their citizens, individual states drew more than their share from the National Grid. As The Hindu newspaper reported, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttarakhand all ;ignored strong warnings from the#8201;.#8201;.#8201;. Central Electricity Regulatory Commission to maintain grid discipline and stop over-drawal;. Behind this short-term political desperation lies a longer-term institutional decline. Back in the 1990s, the distinguished energy scientist A.K.N. Reddy outlined a strategy to overcome India#39;s energy crisis. This focused on reducing theft and distribution losses (estimated at 30-40 per cent of total consumption), upgrading transmission and end-use technologies and running state electricity boards professionally. The suggestions were disregarded. Antiquated technologies were not replaced. Political interference and corruption continued. 上世纪90年代,杰出的能源科学家A#8226;K#8226;N#8226;雷迪(A.K.N. On the same day as the power outage in the north, some bogies in a train in south India caught fire. Forty passengers perished. Although less widely reported in the western media, this accident was likewise symptomatic of the failure of state-run institutions that are crucial to social wellbeing. Hundreds of millions of Indians use the railways every year. They are indispensable to work and family life, carrying migrants back to their homes and to their first jobs. Between April 2010 and March 2012, the Indian railway system suffered 218 accidents, in which some 500 people died. Successive railway ministers have disregarded safety and technological modernisation in favour of running more lines to their own states and constituencies. As with railways and electricity boards, so also with public health and education departments. Indeed, the degradation of state institutions is perhaps the most serious threat to the vitality of Indian democracy and to the long-term success of India#39;s ;growth story;. Four years ago, I wrote an essay for Outlook magazine, mocking the claim – then commonly made by the country#39;s political, business and media elite – that India could or would become a superpower. I argued that despite electoral democracy and high growth rates, there remained pervasive faultlines. These included religious and caste chauvinisms, rising social inequalities, corruption and environmental degradation. I was not optimistic that these faultlines would be easily corrected, given the ;decline in the quality and capability of our politicians and public officials; and ;the apathy and corruption of the state;. I further argued that: ;in the short term, at any rate, the Indian political class can only get more corrupt, and the Indian state more inefficient. In the current, fragmented, political scenario, short-term rent-seeking will take precedence over long-term policy formulation. This shall be true of governments in the states, as well as at the centre;. Far from becoming a superpower, I concluded, India would muddle along in the middle – as it always had. At the time, I was derided as a party-pooper and professional sceptic. I was accused of lacking patriotism and even of being a ;western stool pigeon;. So far as I can tell, the short-term is still with us. How else to explain the fact that on the very day the lights went off in 21 states, the power minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde, was promoted to the post of home minister? His tenure in his previous position was undistinguished. However, he is a long-term loyalist (not to say acolyte) of the Congress party#39;s president, Sonia Gandhi. Besides, he hails from Maharashtra, where a state election is due in a few months. I need only add that, in these respects, the Congress is not exceptional. In Indian politics and public administration, personal loyalty and the appeasement of special interests take precedence over professional competence and the public good. /201208/194026

Gravely ill, a man went to the doctor with his wife. After the examination the physician motioned for the wife to meet him in the hallway.;Your husband is very sick, ; the doctor said, ;but there are three things you can do to ensure his survival. First, fix him three healthful, delicious meals a day. Next, give him a stress-free environment , and don#39;t complain about anything. Finally, make passionate love to him every day.On the drive home the husband asked, ;What did the doctor say?;;I#39;m sorry, ; she said, ;but you#39;re not going to make it.;一个人得了重病,妻子伴随他去看医生。 /201204/177422

It#39;s taken an exact year of planning for the staff at Chapel of the Flowers to prepare for the extraordinary onslaught of Friday#39;s 11/11/11 wedding ceremonies. The first service is set for 8 am, and they will run nonstop for 15 hours in three chapels until 11:11 pm. Couples at this local marriage Meccaare arriving from as far away as Great Britain, Canada, Hungary, French Polynesia and Singapore. Several made their reservation 12 months ago, and couples have aly made reservations for next year#39;s 12/12/12 binary date, the last of the century. Do you ever have those days where everything is a little overwhelming and hectic? Maybe you’ve had a few too many of those days; but it’s time to change that。 The daily work we do – in school, at work or in a business – can easily become overwhelming, ineffective and suck the energy and joy out of what you are doing. Over the years my experience has been that it is essential to keep my work simple and light to get better results in less time and to make things more fun (or at least more acceptable). In this article I’d like to recommend 13 habits that have helped me to do so。 1. Prepare your day the evening before。 Pack your bag or suitcase. Pack the leftovers from your dinner in a container and put it in the fridge. Put your keys, wallet etc. in a place where you can easily find them as you head out in the morning. This preparation will help you to have a less stressful morning。 2. Just check your email once a day。 Checking email, other statistics or social media accounts many times a day tends to drain a lot of time, energy and can leave you unfocused and stressed. Try checking and processing all of those things just once a day instead. I do it at the end of my workday. If that is not possible for you then try to postpone it for a few hours at least. And put your morning energy and focus into your most important task of the day。 3. Write shorter emails。 Limit your emails to 1-5 sentences when possible. You can also have some canned responses for common questions saved in a folder in your email program. This will help you to spend less time and energy on your daily email processing。 4. Be 5-10 minutes early for appointments。 This will make your time of travel during the day into a time of relaxation and recharging. Instead of a time of stress and anxiety. Plus, people tend to like when other people are on time。 5. Work on just one thing at a time。 It will be easier to focus and to do a good job. And to do it in less time compared to if you try to multi-task。 6. Work in a cone of silence。 Just before you start working on that one thing shut down your email program and instant messaging programs. Shut the door to your office. Put your cell phone in silent mode and put it in a drawer. If possible, shut down your internet connection。 7. During your day regularly ask yourself questions for simplicity and focus。 It is easy to get off track during a regular workday. To stay on track or to get back there if you get lost use questions like:平常工作日很容易迷失方向。要想一直保持进度,在迷茫的时候问自己几个问题吧:- What is the most important thing I can do right now?我现在可以做的最重要的事情是什么?- What would I work on if I only had 2 hours for work today?如果我今天只有两小时工作,那我可以干什么?- Is doing this bringing me closer to my goal?我现在做的事情让我离目标更进一步了么?- Am I keeping things extremely simple right now? Let your lunch time be a time of relaxing。 Eat slowly. Put down the fork between bites to make that easier. Eat mindfully and savour each bite. Eating your lunch this way can help you to relax and to release quite a bit of stress in the middle of your workday. Plus, it can help you to not overeat because it takes your brain 20 minutes to register that you are full. By slowing down your eating your brain can stop you before you eat too much。 9. Spend 80% of your time focusing on a solution。 And only 20% of your time on dwelling on your issue, challenge or problem. Instead of doing it the other way around. This makes it easier to live a lighter and more action-filled life and to not fall down into a pit of self-pity or getting stuck in a mental habit of perceived powerlessness。 10. Ask for help。 You don’t have to always do it alone. You can ask for help. You may not always get it but you may also be surprised at how helpful and kind people can be in helping you ease your burdens and solve a challenge. Just don’t forget to do the same for them as best you can when they ask。 11. When overwhelmed, breathe and then say to yourself: just take care of today。 Focus only on that. Forget about all those tomorrows and your yesterdays. Go small, narrow your focus greatly and just take care of today. Then take care of tomorrow when it comes。 12. Consciously set and maintain firm boundaries between your work and personal time。 Have a set stop time for your daily work (mine is 7 o#39;clock). Do not work on weekends. Consciously manage your boundaries and you’ll have less stress and more energy and focus both to do better work and to have a personal life of higher quality。 13. Be smart about the 3 fundamentals of energy。 By that I mean getting enough sleep, exercising a couple of times a week and eating healthy. This may seem very obvious in theory. But in practice it makes a world of difference for your optimism, energy levels, ability to handle stress and to think clearly。 /201507/388217

Today#39;s show plates have a pattern on the front which must be aligned perfectly to the diner. On days when the aesthetic of the food requires plain ones, Defremont explains, they are set so that, should the diner decide to flip them over to the manufacturer#39;s name on the underside, they will be able to do so without the need for any troublesome rotation. Sessions followed on napkin folding and the selection of the correct glass for various kinds of wine. Every single element was entirely logical, and planned so the customer#39;s experience should be seamlessly enjoyable. In fact, my abiding impression was of the incredible amount of work that goes into the setting that should never be noticed – a kind of antithesis of ostentation created with some of the most reassuringly expensive kit I#39;ve ever been allowed to handle. As Ducasse represents the very highest level of three-star table art, there is an opposing philosophy. It doesn#39;t have a name, but you#39;ll sense its presence in restaurants that use plain white crockery and simple, even unmatched, cutlery. Probably the best example is St. John – no ;art; to distract, no background music and staff in something more like chef whites than the starched outfits of traditional waiters. Simplicity usually extends to doing away with the side plate altogether and relying on the clean expanse of white tablecloth or paper slip on which to break the hand-made sourdough. Places such as Andrew Edmunds or Hereford Road have a similar, almost monastic, aesthetic which is intended to focus attention on the food while escaping any of the social pressures of formality. At both ends of the scale the table setting remains a social bellwether – cutlery and crockery are still about class. We either espouse the pretensions of our forebears in new and subtle ways, or knowingly subvert them to show how little we care for bourgeois values (while remaining resolutely bourgeois). In the end, both positions rely on a forensic ing of social convention. Betjeman would have approved. /201207/189451Most of us have struggled at some point with sleep. Whether it#39;s not getting enough sleep or struggling to get up in the morning, it can be difficult to get the balance just right. However, sleep is essential if we want to be productive in life. It provides us with the energy we need to get stuff done! Here are the 10 most common sleep mistakes people make and a few tips for avoiding them! 1.The snooze button1. Don#39;t EVER hit the snooze button. It really is much more beneficial to just get up on your first alarm. Think about it – the snooze button gives you an extra 10 minutes or so sleep. In the grand scheme of your day this really won#39;t provide you with any more energy. In-fact it does the opposite. Research has shown that ‘interrupted sleep#39; can cause us to feel more tired. 2.Disorganized sleeping habits2. It#39;s much easier to get to sleep each night (and wake up feeling refreshed) if we have a regular routine. This means going to bed at roughly the same time each night and getting up at roughly the same time each morning. If you#39;re disorganized with your sleeping routine, you end up interrupting your natural sleeping rhythms, which can cause insomnia and fatigue. 3.Long naps3. Long naps can disrupt your sleeping rhythms so if you#39;re desperate for a nap then keep it under the 30 minute mark (and before 4pm). Short naps after lunch can help to restore energy levels (just make sure you don#39;t sleep in). 4.Caffeine/stimulants4. Don#39;t drink any caffeinated drinks after mid-day. Caffeine stimulates your body for up to 12 hours after consumption so it#39;s important to restrict your intake later in the day. Be aware of supposed ‘herbal#39; drinks such as green tea, which can have a high dose of caffeine. Always check the label. 5.Stress amp; negative thinking5. Stress is a large reason why many people find it difficult to sleep. One of the worse things you can do is be stressed before bed. Stress produces chemicals that physically stop us from sleeping. Try and clear your mind before bed time and make an effort to think positive thoughts that aid sleep. 6.Too much light6. Our bodies depend on ‘sleep signals#39; to fall asleep and one of those signals is darkness. Make sure your room is as dark as possible before trying to get to sleep. Even a thin stream of light coming in through your window can disrupt your pineal gland#39;s production of sleep hormones and therefore disturb your sleep rhythms, so make sure your blinds are closed! Sugary snacks before bedtime are a really bad idea. The sugar can disrupt the chemicals in your body causing you to wake up during the night. Limit all late night sweet treats – if you#39;re hungry go for a protein based snack instead. 8.Alcohol before bedtime8. Alcohol is a sedative and therefore people get fooled into thinking it will help them get a good nights sleep. The reality is that it may initially induce sleep, however it usually drastically impairs sleep during the second half of the night which leads to interrupted sleep patterns that will leave you feeling fatigued in the morning (not to mention the hangover!) 9.TV in the bedroom9. It can be easy to fall asleep on the couch in front of the TV. It#39;s important we don#39;t try and replicate this strategy in the bedroom though. The bedroom must only be associated with sleep. When you start to introduce mental stimulation such as a TV this can severely disrupt your sleep patterns. 10.Worrying about sleep10. If you#39;ve had a few bad nights sleep, then the worst thing you can do is worry too much about it. When we place too much focus on sleeping this can cause anxiety and only make the problem worse. Try to go with the flow and let your body naturally get into a healthy sleep pattern. /201209/198518
