Officials with Afghanistan's new peace council say they are in the early stages of beginning a process to negotiate peace with Taliban militants. This comes a day after the commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, said NATO has facilitated the safe passage of Taliban leaders to Kabul for talks with the Afghan government. The spokesman for Afghanistan's High Council for Peace tells VOA there have been "unofficial" discussions between the Afghan government and the Taliban. Bryali Helali says these talks have been in Kabul, other areas of Afghanistan and even other countries. He says Taliban officials are protected during these discussions. The protection was provided not only by the international security forces, but as well as the government of Afghanistan," said Helali. "This is something routine that is happening in Afghanistan." Helali's comments Saturday come a day after the top commander for the international forces in Afghanistan, U.S. General David Petraeus, said NATO is facilitating the safe passage of Taliban leaders to Kabul as part of the alliance's support for President Hamid Karzai's reconciliation efforts. Officials have not released details of any security arrangements. 201010/115912。

  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas might not agree on much entering negotiations, but analysts said they have something in common. Both are in precarious political situations. Newspaper columns in Israel and the Palestinian territories have placed little hope that these negotiations will accomplish what decades of attempts at peace have failed to do. Others have expressed optimism that the talks have at least made it into a second day. The skepticism is fueled by the perception that both leaders are negotiating from weak positions. Both leaders pressured by partnersIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under pressure from his right-wing coalition partners, who want no concessions on Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. • Google ordered to give up info U.S. court orders Google to turn over to Viacom records for every watched on YouTube. ITN's Harry Fawcett reports.YouTube's multibillion-pound success was built initially on user-generated content; so successful has it become that the company's owner Google recently announced plans to pay contributors shares of advertising revenue. But as anyone who uses the site knows, and who doesn't, there are also vast amounts of professionally-made material, so why, says one film and TV giant, shouldn't it be paid as well?Hello, and welcome to This Week In God.Viacom's cases are far from being user-generated. Much of YouTube's most popular content is actually made at great expense on a commercial basis by film and television companies. And that for such material simply to be regurgitated free of charge on what essentially is a rival channel amounts to copyright theft.A New York court has granted Viacom access to Google's records of Internet Protocol addresses—every individual signature of every individual computer which has been used to watch clips on the site. Viacom has given what it calls an unequivocal promise not to use the information to uncover users' identities; it says it simply wants to find out how much of YouTube's business is predicated on people watching copyrighted material. So is there a real risk to privacy? It's actually much harder than it might seem to, to truly anonymize this quantity of data. It's not just a matter of taking off the usernames or even replacing the IP addresses with random-looking numbers. If you've got records of individuals viewing tens or hundreds or, in some cases, thousands of different YouTube s, it actually can be quite easy to link those together and then to link them back to a given individual.Google says it's disappointed that the court granted, what it calls, Viacom's overreaching demand for viewing history, and is pressing to be allowed to anonymize the information before it hands it over. But the search engine company has come into criticism itself from electronic privacy campaigners for keeping user data for commercial purposes. This high-stakes bet between old and new media giants has thrown a light on wider-reaching issues of privacy and anonymity on the Internet.regurgitate:v. to repeat facts, ideas etc that you have or heard without thinking about them yourself - used to show disapproval200811/56268。
  • Forget stocks, gold is back! This week's sharp rise in commodities was a surprise to some. CNN's Jim Boulden reports.Gold leap for dawns many buildings in the city of London some within the shelter of the bank of England. And while the BOE in its fellow central banks has attempted to stabilize the financial market this week. Many eyes turn back to the precious metals like gold. There’s no a total loss of faith and trust in the system. And when people do, when people lose faith like that, they move toward a hard tangible lasses like gold. On Wednesday gold future saw the biggest one-day jump in history, up 70 dollars. A week is a long time in politics and as we have seen also in the markets. Gold briefly topped 1000 dollars an ounce back in March, but was down 27% from that high this time last week, while oil was down a nearly third from its super spike in July, but all that changed with the bankruptcy of Leman Brothers. Unlike holding shares or bonds or even a bank account, holding a physical commodity means you don’t have to rely on the financial health or the so called counter party, such as a bank or a company or a government. A big reason people turned commodities as safe haven, commodities also benefit this week from the dollar’s weakness, meaning investors could get more dollars and hand more commodities for their money. When the dollar is weak, you tend to find a lot of investments like moving into commodities, because a lot of commodities are denominating US dollars anyway. So as a result, they become cheaper to consume, and more expensive to produce which tends to be poorish for commodities. And secondly, dollars, er, commodities are used as hedge against the declining dollar. So who can take advantage of this, well, you unlikely to stick a few barrels of oil in the basement, gold is another story. Ten ounces gold to fit the pummel hunt could store at home a few ounces. Stores count for very low insurance //. Of course, there were plenty of voices this past summer that warned commodities with then in bubble territory, and it looked like that might be true until this week. Now there are vows calling for gold push over a thousand dollars an ounce once more. And this time stay there as long as financial markets look a bad debt. Jim Boulden, CNN, London.200811/54791。
