This is my last column for The Wall Street Journal, after 22 years of reviewing consumer technology products here. So I thought I#39;d talk about the dozen personal-technology products I reviewed that were most influential over the past two decades. Obviously, narrowing so many products in the most dynamic of modern industries down to 12 is a subjective exercise and others will disagree. Though most were hits, a couple weren#39;t blockbusters, financially, and one was an outright flop. Instead, I used as my criteria two main things. First, the products had to improve ease of use and add value for average consumers. That was the guiding principle I laid down in the first sentence of my first column, in 1991: #39;Personal computers are just too hard to use, and it#39;s not your fault.#39;首先,产品要能提高易用性,能为普通消费者增添价值。 Second, I chose these 12 because each changed the course of digital history by influencing the products and services that followed, or by changing the way people lived and worked. In some cases, the impact of these mass-market products is still unfolding. All of these products had predecessors, but they managed to take their categories to a new level. Some ers will complain that Apple is overrepresented. My answer: Apple introduced more influential, breakthrough products for average consumers than any other company over the years of this column. NASA wants to send your messages to aliens. Back in the 1970s the Voyager 1 probe was sent out into space containing a record of images and words selected by Carl Sagan and others. That craft has now almost certainly left our solar system, and the message in a bottle (or rather a golden record in a space craft) is heading merrily on its way through interstellar space. And now NASA wants to try it again - even though the craft on which it will place its messages is aly 300 million miles from Earth. That craft is New Horizons, a deep space probe heading to Pluto to study its moons and the dwarf planet itself. Though it launched in 2006, New Horizons will not reach Pluto until the summer of 2015, at which point it will start to collect data on everything it sees. But after that - once the craft continues on its path away from the Sun - there#39;s not much more it can do. Or is there? Space artist and journalist Jon Lomberg, who was also involved in putting together the Voyager 1 record, has argued that since the craft will still be contactable from Earth, Nasa should fill its memory banks with messages and data from our planet. Just as with Voyager 1, the idea is that in the (unlikely) situation in which an alien species finds the probe, it might be nice to say hello. Last year he launched a petition to make it happen, and launched an independent group (#39;New Horizons Message Initiative#39;) to collect the message. And now Nasa has agreed! Last month Nasa said that it would do exactly as the group asked, and is now working on ways for anyone to submit their messages in the form of audio, or just words. ;For almost 40 years, people have been inspired by the Voyager record, a portrait of the Earth in 1977,; Lomberg told Space.com. ;The world is very different now, and this new message will reflect the hopes and dreams of the second decade in the 21st century. It will inspire young people#39;s interest in science and ignite the imagination of all ages. We hope it will be an example of global creativity and cooperation.;“如今世界已经大不一样。

FOR decades, the overuse of antibiotics has encouraged the evolution of drug-resistant bacteria which, though they have never broken out and caused an epidemic in the way that was once feared, have nevertheless been responsible for many deaths that might otherwise have been avoided. Now something similar seems to be happening in agriculture. The overuse of drugs against parasitic worms which infest stock animals means that these, too, are becoming drug-resistant. That is bad for the animals#39; health and welfare, and equally bad for farmers#39; profits. This, at least, is the conclusion drawn by Ray Kaplan, a parasitologist at the University of Georgia who has just published a review of research on the problem. His results, which appear in Veterinary Parasitology, make grim ing. Sheep and goats are the worst affected. Studies in Australia, Brazil and the ed States suggest that animals in half or more of farms in many parts of those countries are infested with drug-resistant worms. In some cases the parasites are resistant to every drug that can be thrown at them. The proportion of infested farms is lower in New Zealand, a country that has a huge population of sheep, but even there it is rising at a worrying rate. Cattle, too, are afflicted. Dr Kaplan cites work done in Argentina, Brazil and New Zealand. And horses suffer as well, with resistant worms turning up in both America and Europe. The root of the problem is what Dr Kaplan refers to as ;global worming;-giving drugs prophylactically to all livestock rather than reserving them for use as a treatment when an animal actually becomes infested. It is common sense, of course, to try to prevent infestation rather than merely treating it once it has arisen. Unfortunately, such promiscuous use of drugs is the best way to put selection pressure on the worms and encourage the evolution of resistant strains. What is needed, says Dr Kaplan, is more selective drug use, and better management. Worms are not evenly distributed. Instead, a minority of animals play host to most of them. Aiming treatment at those animals would reduce the likelihood of resistance emerging without harming a farmer#39;s ability to control infestations. Better husbandry might help, too. Not grazing so many animals on a given patch of land would discourage transmission. That, though, would bring problems of its own, as it would reduce the number of animals which could be raised on a given farm. Which leads to the nub of the issue: it is hard to work out exactly how much damage resistant worms are doing, and thus how much effort should be put into trying to stop the sp of resistance-not least because, as Dr Kaplan found out when he conducted his survey, the data are pretty sporadic. But they are worrying enough to be worth following up, for if resistance did get out of hand the consequences could be very expensive indeed. No one farmer is to blame. This is a tragedy of the commons, in which sensible individual decisions have led to a collective difficulty. But it might behove farmers to think more about how they use anti-worm drugs. If they do not, they may find that those drugs have become useless.

It didn#39;t take long for Brad O#39;Neill to get back in the game. It was late 2007, and StumbleUpon -- the popular content discovery service and his highest-profile investment at the time -- had just a few months earlier been scooped up by eBay (EBAY) for million in cash. O#39;Neill, an angel investor for the company, could have easily sat back and enjoyed the return on what one reporter called ;your typical dot-com Cinderella story.; Instead, he started another company.那是在2007年末,几个月前StumbleUpon(热门的内容发现网站,也是当时他最受关注的一项投资)刚刚被eBay (EBAY)以7,500万美元现金收购。 ;I had just sold StumbleUpon to eBay with Garrett Camp and Geoff Smith and was starting to think about a new problem to go solve,; O#39;Neill says. ;My technical co-founder Steve Norall and I were talking. He was working as an industry analyst and overwhelmed with all the writing he had to do. And we were talking about how content automation was becoming increasingly possible. I was in the British Virgin Islands on vacation and ruining it by Skyping with Steve and brainstorming what would become TechValidate.;“我和盖瑞特o坎普、杰夫o史密斯将StumbleUpon卖给eBay不久,就开始考虑一个新的、要解决的问题,”奥尼尔说。 O#39;Neill describes TechValidate#39;s namesake product as a ;software-as-a-service content automation platform for B2B companies.; Custom content has become a popular approach to marketing, but corporate teams are too busy to create content targeted enough to be effective, O#39;Neill says. TechValidate#39;s tool imports content it deems relevant for verified customers of B2B companies from its library. Marketers then review it in private and publish it across platforms, whether in a marketing automation platform, in a customer relations management tool, on social media channels, or on the web. ;We invented the space. Nobody was doing it before we showed up,; he says.;We built a content robot that is designed to make it simple for a marketing team that is aly overstretched to build targeted content -- so targeted that a human couldn#39;t do it.;“我们开创了这个市场空间。 TechValidate introduced its product in the middle of 2008 and now counts GE (GE), Hewlett Packard (HP), IBM (IBM), Dell, Hitachi, CA Technologies (CA), SAP (SAP), and Intel (INTC) as customers. O#39;Neill says the company -- which did not accept outside investment -- made million in revenue in 2013 and is on track to make million, profitably, this year. ;Steve and I had a very conscious decision that we weren#39;t going to seek venture money for this,; O#39;Neill says. ;We kept comparing ourselves to SurveyMonkey, which also has these very positive feedback loops. If we#39;re charging the right amount of money, we won#39;t need venture money. We turned profitable in our first year and we still are.;“诺埃尔和我做出了一个非常清醒的决定,这家公司我们不打算寻求风险投资,”奥尼尔说。 Josh Kopelman of First Round Capital, which invested in StumbleUpon, says O#39;Neill and Norall have the right approach. ;I don#39;t believe many teams could have accomplished what Brad has without outside investment. We just don#39;t see too many bootstrapped businesses getting to scale in enterprise software. It#39;s a viable path, but uncommon.;First Round Capital的约什o考普曼曾经投资StumbleUpon。 On Tuesday, the company announced a partnership with Oracle (ORCL) to integrate its service into Eloqua, that company#39;s marketing automation software. O#39;Neill describes the deal as a way to make it easier for the 35% of his customers who use Eloqua and TechValidate together, but the arrangement also exposes his company to a larger audience through its presence in the EloquaAppCloud software hub. ;The challenge they have is that they don#39;t have all this content to fill these pages,; O#39;Neill says. ;Companies have gone out and spent millions of dollars for marketing automation, and they realize that the deployment doesn#39;t achieve its objectives without content. Eloqua customers were asking for a more streamlined way to pull our assets into that environment. So now any of our joint customers have the ability to build and distribute and syndicate our content in Eloqua -- they don#39;t have to leave it.;“他们的挑战是没有这样的内容来填充页面,”奥尼尔表示。 Eloqua。”Just how big an opportunity is content automation? O#39;Neill would only say that his company sits in between the ;multibillion-dollar; marketing automation industry and the billion content marketing industry -- ;the single largest line item in the marketing budget.; It#39;s not a bad place to be. ;Because we#39;re one of a kind, it#39;s difficult to talk about a total addressable market,; he says. ;When you#39;re a unicorn it#39;s a self-serving thing. But we#39;re sitting between two wonderful trends that are both increasing.;“因为我们是其中一个,很难谈论总的可到达市场,”他说。
