Consumer goods消费品The mystery of the Chinese consumer揭秘中国消费者 In the first of a two-part series on Asian consumers, we ask what makes the Middle Kingdom’s shoppers tickJul 7th 2011 | SHANGHAI | from the print edition LILY LI wears a lanyard with a little plastic card around her neck, even at weekends. It is a badge of honour: it shows that she has a white-collar job. (She is a secretary at Access Asia, a retail-research company in Shanghai.) She uses Apple earphones for the cheap Chinese mobile phone in her pocket, so it looks as if she owns an iPhone. And she drives to work, though it takes four times longer than public transport, just to show off her little car. After decades of deprivation and conformism, Chinese consumers regard expensive consumer goods as trophies of success. In public, they show off. In private, they pinch pennies. The owner of a gleaming new BMW will drive around for half an hour to avoid a 50 cent parking fee. And she will hesitate to spend much on interior decoration, because only her family sees the inside of her flat. By some forecasts China will be the second-largest consumer market in the world by 2015, not far behind America. Chinese people aly buy more cars than people in any other country: 13.5m last year to Americans’ 11.6m. China is on its way to becoming the biggest luxury-goods market. The central government made an increase in domestic consumption one of the priorities of its latest five-year plan. 201107/143932

So for a recap and get you up to date on all the latest stories, we're so happy to be joined by Rachel Zalis . She is the westcoast editor for Life amp; Style magazine. Rachel , thanks for joining us. Thank you so much for having me. So first of all ,what is the latest on Britney Spears, the 26-year-old pop star was granted over-night visit with her boys. Tell us about this, and is she finally on the right track?Yes, things are looking up for Britney , finally. I mean, you know, she won her Grammy for her song Toxic years ago. And her life is, sort of , seem to reflect that title lately. And , you know, ever since her divorce with Kevin Federline, things are sort of sprung out of control for her. You know, public meltdowns, rehab, hospitalization, shaving her head. And, you know, as in January, Kevin Federline became the "sole custody", got "sole custody" of her kids. And , you know, over the last six months, we've really seen Britney try to hold her life together. You know, her dad is, sort of , overseeing her finances. She's been working out. And, you know, she just have this hearing the other day where the judge is saying that she could get overnight stays now with her kid, which will be a huge win for her. Up until now, in the last six months, she says, you know, very limited, you know, uh, meetings with the children that were supervised. So this will be great. It's great to see things going away. And legally speaking, what's next? I mean, can she get back custody of her sons in the future? I think, you know, I think, Kevin Federline and his lawyer have said, they really want Britney to have more involvement with the kids, to work towards that kind of situation, though. I defintely think if Britney keeps on this path where she's really staying on the strait narrow. She's getting her life together. You know, obviously, it's best for the kids to be with their mother. So , I think, she definitely , has that in store for her in the future.200810/54019

Those awards are known as Ippies. NYCMA director Juana Ponce de Leon explains that the ethnic press often advocates for its communities, and acts as an intermediary between the audience and mainstream society. She adds that her organization encourages reporters to offer practical guidance to ers, listeners and viewers. It helps the communities know where there are resources to address their concerns. It’s not good enough to say ‘We don’t have enough translation services from the DOE [Department of Education]’ and leave it at that. It’s better to say ‘Not only are there those services, but if you don’t find them, you can request them. And if they don’t come to you, then you have a right to get your child to another school, for instance.’" The ethnic media often provides immigrants with the tools they need to negotiate everyday life in America, says 2011 Ippie winner Helen Zelon. I think the ethnic press does an enormous service when it explains to people, ‘This is what happens when your kid starts school. Here’s how you establish yourself here.’" Zelon, a reporter with City Limits Magazine, a public policy journal, often writes about education. Which means you are writing about race and class and money and politics and power and privilege and all of it," she says. "And I write about child welfare, which to me is a hugely important issue that doesn’t get a lot of coverage until there is a very bad disaster and then there is a lot of attention around it and then it goes away. We do investigative reporting." 201103/129585

Teenager‘s experiment with alcohol. In many countries and societies, that’s just a fact. And so many parents of teenagers may think that it’s a good idea to teach their kids to drink responsibly by having a few drinks with them. But according to at least one study, drinking with teens is not a good idea. In fact, it’s a very bad idea. The study argues that kids who are allowed to drink under adult supervision are more likely to develop drinking problems than kids whose parents have a hard and fast policy on their not drinking until they turn twenty-one. Now, this might strike you as strange and even unlikely. Will allowing your teenage kids to have a beer or two or a glass of wine with dinner really turn them into alcoholics? No, not in such absolute terms.【生词注释】alcohol n. 201110/158802

Human Rights Watch accused government troops of placing mines last month south of Ajdabiya. And while a rebel commander vowed his forces would not use landmines, over the weekend, journalists reported seeing rebels burying the devices near Ajdabiya's eastern gate. Further north, Benghazi driver Tarek el Mehadawi said he is not so worried about the area around his hometown, but is concerned about other parts of the country. Mehadawi said areas around Sirte, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's hometown, or the besieged city of Misrata would be likely places for the hidden munitions, but that it's very difficult to know their precise location. Which is what makes the weapons so deadly. Earlier, Ukraine shut all four of its pipelines that ship the fuel to Europe. Prime Minister Putin's go-ahead to stop gas shipments to Ukraine was based on a recommendation from Gazprom chairman Alexei Miller. Mr. Putin tells Miller that he agrees with his proposal, but notes the cutoff should be carried out as publicly as possible in the presence of international observers. Responding to questions from the prime minister, Miller said Gazprom has documented evidence that Ukraine caused the European shutdown. But there are discrepancies in the timeline. Ukrainian officials reported Russia ceased delivery hours before the Miller-Putin meeting. Kyiv says it was this stoppage that forced Ukraine to close the pipelines that supply Europe. Throughout the day Russian officials also insisted they had only withheld 21 million cubic meters, the amount of gas they allege Ukraine had stolen from Russia since the previous day. The spokesman for Ukraine's Naftohaz gas company, Valentyn Zemliansky, told VOA the country's pipeline system was aly being used to avoid shortfalls in eastern Ukraine. Zemliansky says the Ukrainian system is not empty, because it is working in reverse, which means gas is being pumped out of underground storage tanks in western Ukraine and is being shipped to consumers in the eastern part of the country. Ukrainian officials deny stealing Russian gas and say the country has enough reserves to last through April. Gazprom's deputy chairman, Alexander Medvedev, warned about possible damage to the Ukrainian pipeline system. He spoke on Russia's Vesti-24 News Channel. Medvedev says if gas does not flow through the system in cold weather, it could stop altogether because of hydraulic blockages. He says removing the blockages entails very serious operations, including cutting new taps in the pipe. But Naftohaz gas company spokesman Zemliansky rejects Medvedev's statement as fear-mongering aimed at individuals who do not know pipeline technology. He told VOA the system will remain viable under any circumstances, even if the gas runs out completely. Ukraine says it had been forced to use reserves to maintain the pressure needed to move gas to European consumers before the valves were closed. Shortages are being felt as far downstream as France and Germany. McCormack notes the episode underscores the critical need to diversify sources of natural gas, as well as other energy sources. 01/60667

The WTO and ChinaHands slapped世贸组织与中国的交锋A ruling with ramifications 裁决之意,一石多鸟Jul 7th 2011 | from the print edition WHEN China joined the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in late 2001, its share of world exports stood at 4.3%. By last year that share had soared to 10.6%, and the country had become the world’s biggest exporter. In addition to awe and envy, its rise has spawned a rapidly growing list of trade quarrels. China was a party to only two of the 93 trade disputes that were taken to the WTO between its accession and the end of 2005. But in the five years to the end of 2010, it was involved in 26 of the 84 cases filed at the forum. On July 5th the WTO’s dispute-settlement body found against China on three linked complaints. The cases were brought by America, the European Union and Mexico in and took issue with China’s policy of restricting the exports of certain industrial raw materials, including bauxite, magnesium, zinc and silica, of which it is a leading producer. The plaintiffs argued that China’s policies gave domestic firms that use these commodities an unfair competitive advantage, while also restricting world supply of these inputs and causing their prices to soar.7月5号,世贸争议解决机构在连续3场投诉中都判定中国违规。 China says its restrictions were motivated by its desire to conserve the world’s limited supply of these materials and to protect the environment from the pollution caused by their extraction. The problem with this line of argument, as the WTO panel noted, was that although China restricted the export of these commodities, it had done nothing to reduce their actual production. China’s policies were in clear violation of its WTO commitments, it found. China expressed “regret” at the WTO’s ruling and has up to 60 days to lodge an appeal. Jeffrey Schott of the Peterson Institute for International Economics, a think-tank in Washington, DC, expects “several more big cases against China soon”. But the significance of this judgment goes beyond China. Many countries banned some food exports during the food-price spike of 2008. A renewed period of buoyant commodity prices and demand could easily tempt more governments to emulate China’s restrictions on exports of raw materials. The WTO’s judgment may dissuade at least some countries from doing so. And given the rotten state of the Doha round of trade talks, a show of teeth in defence of a rules-based trading system is more useful than ever. 201107/143936

Why is that important?D.I.: It's important because our children are being exposed in all directions from their food, everyday products, cleaning products everything in the home. The air, our soil, our water is polluted. Many these products in our food chain has carcinogens and neurotoxins and endocrine disrupters, hormone disrupters , so it makes sense to use at least some of toxicity with everything you do with your children for alive. Sam: And ing this, it starts to make sense to me because we have somebody crying in the studio. It starts to make sense to me because (Oh, baby) you smell the product when you spray, it smells harsh to you, but the kids are on the floor, (Right!) they have their mouth on the table, they are actually ingesting all these stuff. Let's start with the house cleaning products and do we get the chemicals out of these products? D.I.: Yes, these products are all non-toxic products, the great example here of hand dish, distilled white vinegar which has been around for years, and then non-toxical purpose cleaners. The difference with the green and non-toxic cleaning products is that they do not contain chlorine bleach (alright) or ammonia or any of those synthetic chemicals. Sam: Those are two that we are really worried about, chlorine and ammonia. D.I.: Really. Especially chlorine bleach for moms that have little babies and pets. It's a low-lying chemical, which means it`s at around our knees here. It stays at that level where your child's mouth is breathing, (inhaling) a young child. So it's much more detrimental to children. Sam: I love your tip that cleaning products should look like water because if they don't, then they have chemicals and false colorings and everything else, sort of. So they should look clear like that. I didn't think about that.D.I.: Unless they use vegetable dye for their colorings, they are naturally going to be clear. Otherwise they have synthetic chemicals that are very harmful. Sam: I didn't even think about that. Sam: Now glass bottles. This was the biggest news yesterday with the plastic bottles, glass bottles and baby food, organic baby food. Tell me why organic food`s important. D.I.: Organic food is important because organic means that all the food that you are feeding your child does not have pesticides. Again, pesticides are known carcinogens and neurotoxin and are totally in links from studies with all the children's illnesses that will happen. It smells good, right?Sam: It does smell good. D.I.: "EARTHS BEST" (the trademark of an organic food for children) has been around, this is what I fed my son, my nine-year-old son and I've even eaten this baby food, there's a study that was done where they found in conventional baby food over 16 different pesticides, just in a jar of baby food. Sam: See, and let's see, let's say that again, because when I that this morning, getting y for your interview, that really shocked me. Sixteen in a test of baby food, regular baby food. (Right!) How many pesticides did they found? D.I.: Sixteen they found. And pesticides are known carcinogens and neurotoxins and are linked to everything from cancer, to autism, to learning disabilities, allergies, asthma. Sam: Well, let's be fair, this cost more money than regular baby food right now, by about how much?D.I.: Well it does cost a little more, but also you can buy them in bulk. You can go to certain stores, health food stores now that they are more cost-competitive and of course now Gerber has an organic line as well. Sam: OK, that's helpful.D.I.: So,there`s alternative, but you can make your own baby food. I did that as, when my child was a baby, it's easy to make, just mashing up the yams and the potatoes and the green vegetables. It`s, it`s easy. Sam: so in that way, it isn't more expensive. And you can keep ... D.I.: No, it's not.D.I.: So a lot of them you can put in glass jars at home, and it`s, you save money. Sam: There are so many more tips in this book, there, from the school stuff that we just... I wanted to talk about this. This really bothered me when I heard about this from....D.I.: Well, the baby bottles are big thing too, glass bottles are the gold standard for baby bottles. I highly recommend glass. For whatever reason, if someone doesn't want glass and there is healthier plastic bottles, but still it's plastic. They've taken out the major chemicals in them but they are still toxic. Sam: We'll link you if you are interested in this topic to her book and everything else you need to know in abcnews.com. This was just wonderful. Again, (Thank you!) there`s one of the reasons, one of the reasons that I have a crush on you!kick off: Originally means to make the kick that begins a football game. But here just means to start, to begin.carcinogen: A cancer-causing substance or agent.neurotoxin: A toxin that damages or destroys nerve tissue.endocrine : The secretion of an endocrine gland; a hormone.01/61101

The spirit of commerce is alive and well in traditionally communist China, as the country gets y for the Olympics. For people in Beijing, China are going gaga over the upcoming Olympics since being awarded of the Games in 2001 the city have undergone a major transformation to prepare itself to host, literally, the planet, this summer, everything from subways to highways and the airports, they've all have been revamped and expanded to host millions of spectators that will descend on Beijing. Joining me now Money magazine, Senior Writer, George Manne, see you were there. Thank you for joining us, today,Thank you for having me Bringing us a little piece of Beijing, what’s interesting, you have talked about a bit of how the city is really educating the public about the Olympic Games, what did you notice?Well. It is the coolest thing that I have ever seen in a subway that you didn't ,don't wanna talk to the police about ,it was they had s , not only do they have TV monitors in the newest subway lines, but while I was there , they were running non-stop educational s about the Olympics ,so if you watch for 5 minutes ,and if you know Chinese which I don’t. You can learn all about how you judge let's say the trampoline competition, what makes a good trampolinist versus, you know, a none-medal-winning trampolinist. They're really trying to get them into it.Oh,yeah, plus, they were showing an endless loop of the sequence of events that showed originally when China was awarded at the Olympics. They had Samaranch, they had the International Olympics Committee announcing Beijing ,and everybody cheering. When I was in Athens they had the Olympics, and they were doing the as similar, as similar thing, but it does not sound like to the same extent .It seems like Beijing is really taking this all out.Yeah, it’s been an excuse for a lot of construction in the city, building new highways, obviously building the main venues also upgrading transportation systems around them ,around the city.Other than changes in infrastructure, what did you notice, the signal that hail the Olympics are coming?Lots of advertising, everywhere you look, there were billboards with Olympic times, also billboards with the five cute little furry little mascots for the Olympics.Right. I’ve seen thoseThose are the Fuwa, the good luck dolls and they represent different Olympic sports, different Olympic ideals, and also different elements, five different, elements (Earth, fire, wind), yes ,and also different animals representatives of China . There is a panda there, too. Of course. What is also interesting is that the government has cut down on call-to-call guerilla advertising by non-Olympic sponsors, they are trying to make an effort that if you see an advertisement that has something to do with sports; it is from an official sponsor who has paid-up.But what about the big sponsors like Nike for example, how are the Chinese government officials controlling their advertising in Beijing?Well , it is pretty uncontrollable , sorry Carol advertisement is everywhere ,that was one of the things that were the most interesting thing to me, going to China for the first time , you think of China as a socialist country ,but is just filled with capitalism and buying and purchasing ,and stuff like that. What are you noticing, you know, finally just from the men and women and pedestrians on the street, what is different do you think possibly about their behavior, are they really really geared up for the game , and some of them // off the construction that they have to deal with to prepare for the Games ?Well, that is an issue in China ,there has been a lot of tearing down of old neighborhoods are to build new buildings, new hotels ,just to develop the city ,and it does not seem as if there is a strong historic preservation movement in China as strong as it is let's say in major cities in the ed States . So that is just rolling along there. I have to ask you about the smog, because if you think the smog in L.A. is bad, you should check out Beijing, right? I mean, it's supposed to be a little less now, because they cut off a lot of their industrial production for the GamesYes every, people that I spoke to said you know unfortunately this is about the worst time of the year that you could have an event in Beijing, it is just seasonally . it is just a bad and more polluted time , what I told people coming back, I live in NY,what I told people coming back,it was a really exciting city, make New York feel like a small town, make NY feel like just a little tiny building that has not that many people ,it also made NY look like it had air like in a country meddle compared to Beijing . So I know they are really fighting to try to fix them up in time for the Games.Yeah we'll see what happens, George, thank you for giving us you first // perspective, I appreciate that.200811/56847
