Visitors to Britain may find the best place to sample local culture is in a traditional pub. But these friendly hostelries can be minefields of potential gaffes for the uninitiated. An anthropologist and a team of researchers have unveiled some of the arcane rituals of British pubs--starting with the difficulty of getting a drink. Most pubs have no waiters--you have to go to the bar to buy drinks. A group of Italian youths waiting 45 minutes before they realized they would have to fetch their own. This may sound inconvenient, but there is a hidden purpose. Pub culture is designed to promote sociability in a society known for its reserve. Standing at the bar for service allows you to chat with others waiting to be served. The bar counter is possibly the only site in the British Isles in which friendly conversation with strangers is considered entirely appropriate and rea1ly quite normal behaviour. "If you haven't been to a pub, you haven't been to Britain." This tip can be found in a booklet, Passport to the Pub: The Tourists' Guide to Pub Etiquette, a customers' code of conduct for those wanting to sample "a central part of British life and culture". The trouble is that if you do not follow the local rules, the experience may fall flat. For example, if you are in a big group, it is best if only one or two people go to buy the drinks. Nothing irritates the regular customers and bar staff more than a gang of strangers blocking all access to the bar while they chat and dither about what to order. /200904/68468Stiletto heels could be banned from the workplace because of health and safety reasons, according to the Trade Union bosses. The Trade Union Congress, predominantly male, has proposed a motion arguing that high heels are demeaning to women while they also contribute to long term injuries. They propose instead that women wear "sensible shoes" with an inch heel limit in an attempt to avoid future foot and back pain as well as injuries. The motion is due to be debated at next month's conference. The motion, tabled by the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, states: "Congress believes high heels may look glamorous on the Hollywood catwalks but are completely inappropriate for the day-to-day working environment." Feet bear the brunt of daily life, and for many workers prolonged standing, badly fitted footwear, and in particular high heels can be a hazard. Around two million days a year are lost through sickness as a result of lower limb disorders."“足部每天承受着日常生活的重担,对于许多要长久站立的劳动者来说,不合脚的鞋,特别是高跟鞋是危险之源。 Wearing high heels can cause long-term foot problems, such as blisters, corns and calluses, and also serious foot, knee and back pain and damaged joints."“穿高跟鞋可引发长期的足部疾病,比如水泡,鸡眼,老茧,以及严重的脚部、膝部和背部疼痛和关节损伤。”"Many employers in the retail sector force women workers to wear high heels as part of their dress code."“许多零售业的雇主会强迫女员工穿高跟鞋,并把穿高跟鞋作为着装规范的一部分。”"More must be done to raise awareness of this problem so that women workers and their feet are protected."“我们必须采取更多行动来唤起人们对这一问题的认识,从而使女员工和她们的脚受到保护。”Nadine Dorries, the Tory MP, however criticised the motion and said the extra height heels give women can help them when in the workplace. I'm 5ft 3in and need every inch of my Christian Louboutin heels to look my male colleagues in the eye," she said. "If high heels were banned in Westminster, no one would be able to find me." The TUC need to get real, stop using overtly sexist tactics by discussing women's stilettos to divert tension away from Labour chaos."“工会联盟需要实际一点,不要再用这种带有明显性别歧视的策略来讨论女人的高跟鞋,从而引开人们的视线,缓和工党的混乱局面造成的紧张气氛。”Michelle Dewberry, a former winner of The Apprentice, said the motion was patronising. This is absolutely ridiculous and I think these union officials should be spending their time dealing with more important issues," she said. I'm at work in five-inch heels and perfectly able to do my job. Heels are sexy, they boost your confidence and they are empowering to women."“我现在就穿着5英寸的高跟鞋在工作,而且毫不费力。 I can't imagine these officials debating a motion about how tightly men should wear their ties. /200908/80873According to the Daily Telegraph of October 31, a new study has revealed that eating almonds can help the body to fight off viral infections such as the common cold and flu. The scientists, who are based at the Institute of Food Research in Norwich and the Policlinico Universitario (University Hospital)in Messina, Italy, said they found almond skins improved the ability of the white blood cells to detect viruses while also increasing the body's ability to prevent viruses from replicating and so sping inside the body. They also said that although more research has to be carried out to determine how much almond should be eaten for an effect to be reached, it is likely that eating almonds regularly could help protect people from becoming infected with viruses in the first place, while it could also help those aly infected to fight off their illness. /201011/117077

Britain's children are being poisoned by a "junk culture"of processed food, computer games and over-competitive education, an influential group of children's authors and experts warned. In an open letter to The Daily Telegraph, 110 teachers, psychologists and children's authors including the internationally acclaimed author Philip Pullman1 and Penelope Leach, a leading childcare expert--called on the government to act now to prevent childhood being killed off altogether.Forced "to act and dress like mini-adults," children are becoming increasingly depressed and experiencing escalating levels of behavioral and developmental problems, they said.Since children's brains are still developing, they cannot adjust as full-grown adults can, to the effects of ever more rapid technological and cultural change," the letter said."They need what developing human beings have always needed, including real food (as opposed to processed "junk"), real play (as opposed to sedentary, screen based entertainment), first hand experience of the world they live in and regular interaction with the real-life significant adults in their lives. The experts condemned Britain's increasingly "target-driven" education system and urged the government to recognize children's need for more time and space to develop. /200812/57995Saint Lucia's Day is a Swedish traditional holiday. On December 13th,one of the shortest, darkest days in the long and cold winter,Sweden celebrates the holiday,in honor of Saint Lucia, the Queen of Lights. On the day, girls in Sweden dress up as Santa Lucia wearing a white dress and a crown of candles. They wear hats that are pointy with golden stars on them. In Sweden people do not wear candles anymore because before girls caught their hair on fire very often. Today they use modern candles with batteries in them. After lunch most schools close on Santa Lucia day around noon. It is a national holiday of Sweden. In big cities in Sweden there are beauty contests where some women dress up as Santa Lucia and the judges and the people vote for the Santa Lucia of the year. There are also special foods for Lucia's Day like spicy gingerb biscuits. In schools people sing Santa Lucia's song. /200909/83243As the season of sneezing and grabbing tissues begins with the autumn's first frosts, medical researchers have found that "granny's nostrums" to fend off colds may be scientifically proven.Although apparently common sense, straightforward connections between chilling and viral infection have been hard to prove, according to the common cold centre at Cardiff University--the world's only centre dedicated to researching and testing new medicines for the treatment of flu and the common cold. But the latest experiment reinforces theories that existing, latent infection can be activated when parts of the body, particularly the feet and nose, get wet and cold. All participants took off their shoes and socks and temperatures were monitored throughout the experiment.Ninety volunteers who spent 20 minutes with their feet in bowls of iced water have provided evidence that failing to wrap up warmly is directly linked to falling prey to sore throats and a bunged-up nose.Claire Johnson and Ron Eccles found that 29% of the volunteers developed cold symptoms within five days."When colds are circulating, many people are mildly infected but show no symptoms," said Professor Eccles, whose findings are published in today's issue of Family Practice magazine."But if they become chilled, this causes a pronounced constriction of the blood vessels in the nose and shuts off the warm blood that supplies the white cells that fight infection. ""Although the chilled subject believes they have 'caught a cold', what has in fact happened is that the dormant infection has taken hold."But they also suggested that another explanation could be that our noses are colder in the winter. Prof Eccles said: "A cold nose may be one of the major factors that causes common colds to be seasonal.""When the cold weather comes we wrap ourselves up in winter coats to keep warm but our nose is directly exposed to the cold air. Cooling of the nose slows down clearance of viruses from the nose and slows down the white cells that fight infection."The researchers said:" Parents should feel confident in telling children to wrap themselves up in those nose-protecting garment this winter." /200812/58540

It was ordained of God as the foundation and bond of family life, for the mutual help and comfort of the husband and wife. It is a covenant, not a contract. Marriage is therefore not to be entered upon by any thoughtlessly, but thoughtfully, reverently, and in the fear of God. Into this holy estate these two persons come now to be joined. I charge you both, before God the searcher of all hearts, that having considered the holy covenant you are about to make, you do now declare before this company your pledge of faith and love towards each other. Additionally, we like to eat greasy and spicy food to keep our bodies warm. This kind of food is highest fat and highest calories and makes us feel thirsty. When we drink a lot of water without exercising, it is easy to have a edema that is why we can easily put on weight. Plus is we wear thick clothes covering our bodies, we lower our standard for body shape. Luckily, it is not too late to get healthy. 1. Eat less meat and more vegetables. Increasing obesity has prompted an Australian state to seek larger planes for the country's famous "Flying Doctor" service, ambulance and government officials said Saturday.New South Wales state has just put out a tender to assess the cost of obtaining two larger new planes for its air ambulance fleet, which is flown under contract by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to service remote and rural areas.Recent global surveys have repeatedly highlighted Australians as among the most obese people in the world, despite the country's association with an active, healthy lifestyle and love of sport. The two new planes would be able to carry patients up to 260 kg (573 lb), nearly twice the current limit of 140 kg (308 lb), a spokeswoman for the state's health ministry told Reuters."The ambulance service has obviously seen a need," the spokeswoman said.A New South Wales ambulance service spokeswoman said it followed similar moves by other parts of the service, including ground ambulances and helicopters, to accommodate larger patients.Asked if the move was prompted by increasing levels of obesity, she told the repoters: "Essentially, yes."Royal Flying Doctor Service: /200901/60653Put a muzzle on your bad breathSome simple measures can helpput a muzzle onbad breath, according to an article in the June issue of the Mayo Clinic Health Letter.Bad breath can be caused by food particles in the mouth, dry mouth, or a health problem. Mayo experts offer these tips to help prevent it:Brush your teeth or usemouthwashafter you eat. Brushing is the more effective of the two. If you use mouthwash, make sure you swish it around in your mouth for 30 seconds before you spit it out.Flossyour teeth at least once a day in order to remove decaying food. When brushing your teeth, brush the back of your tongue, too, or scrape it with a tongue scraper.Drink water to keep your mouth moist. When your mouth gets dry, there isn't enough saliva to wash away dead cells. You can also chew sugarless gum or suck on sugarless hard candy to help stimulate saliva production.Don't eat foods - such as onions and garlic - that encourage bad breath. These foods contain oils that are transferred to the lungs and exhaled. If you have dentures, clean them daily to get rid of food particles and bacteria. If these simple measures don't improve your bad breath, see your doctor or dentist. Persistent bad breath may be a sign of periodontal disease, an abscessed tooth, chronic sinusitis, postnasal drip, chronic bronchitis, certain kinds of oesophageal problems, and other health conditions.《梅奥门诊健康通讯》6月号上刊登的一篇文章提到,有几种简单的方法可防止口臭。 Vocabulary:put a muzzle on: 防止;遏制mouthwash: 漱口水 /200808/45870
