Books and Arts; Book Review;文艺;书评;New British fiction;新英国小说;The writer and the spy;作家和间谍;A clever book that leaves you cold;打不动人心的一本智慧书;Sweet Tooth. Ian McEwan. At 64, with a Hollywood film, a Man Booker prize and a gong from the queen, Ian McEwan has become a grand old man of British letters. Publication of his latest novel, “Sweet Tooth”, was announced on the evening news. A ing at the Edinburgh book festival was introduced by none other than the first minister, Alex Salmond.64岁那年,带着被改编成的好莱坞电影,伊恩. For all the attendant publicity, “Sweet Tooth” is not Mr McEwans finest book. It has neither the darkness of “The Comfort of Strangers” nor the passion of “Enduring Love”, nor even the forensic observation that made “On Chesil Beach” such an uncomfortable and memorable . It is a clever book—ostensibly about spying, yet really about writers and the alchemy of fiction. But it is also curiously forgettable. What it lacks is not so much an animating spirit, as a heart. The novel is set in 1972, a pivotal year in post-war British history, when a series of bloody IRA bombings and debilitating miners strikes seemed to presage the political and economic chaos that would mark the rest of the decade. Farther afield, the cold war stumbled on, as East and West battled for cultural influence. In her final year at Cambridge—nest of an earlier generation of spies—Serena Frome (rhymes with “plume”, the er is swiftly told, for no discernible reason) has an affair with an older man, who helps recruit her to become a junior spy. At the time the West was spending millions sping anti-Soviet propaganda, and America was bankrolling newspapers and broadcasters like Radio Free Europe. Serena, a compulsive er of fiction, is sent on a secret mission to convert a promising young novelist, Tom Haley, to the cause. Serena Frome (与”plume”押韵,给读者一带而过,没有别的意思。) The two become lovers. Their hedonistic affair is full of Chablis and long discussions about famous writers and publishers of the time (Martin Amis, Tom Maschler). The book chugs along this way until the end, when Mr McEwan delivers an unwieldy denouement and some unearned sadness. By then it is hard to feel much of anything for these heroes, who are all notions and no depth. /201209/199430。

  • Books and Arts; Book Review;文艺;书评;Otters in the wild野生水獭Beguiling carnivores欺骗性的肉食动物A muse to poets, a mystery to scientists诗人的灵感,科学家的谜团Poets dig my style诗人尽挖我的风采Otter Country: In Search of the Wild Otter. Written in prose as sinuous as the creatures themselves, “Otter Country” is a celebration of Britains wild otters. These elusive animals have fascinated Miriam Darlington, a poet, since childhood, when she first “Ring of Bright Water”, Gavin Maxwells classic 1960 tale about living with otters. “Never mind the slippery reality it portrays,” she writes, “the spell of its otters took hold of me long ago and I still long to see one in the wild.”《水獭国度》是部英国野生水獭的颂典,其散文式风格如水獭自身一般流转。 This mesmerising book describes her year-long quest across Britain, from Devon to Scotland, Cumbria to Wales, through seductive wild places and changing seasons, for a glimpse of otters and to meet people who dedicate their lives to them. The otter was one of the earliest carnivores. Its ancestral genus Mionictis, first roamed the Earth around 30m years ago. Thirteen species now thrive around the globe, barring Australia and Antarctica, but it is Lutra lutra, the European otter and Britains only species, that is the object of Ms Darlingtons passion. Otters have long fascinated man. Their nocturnal habits mean they are rarely seen—“otters give so little of themselves its hard to know them,” Ms Darlington writes. Their “sublimely secretive” nature makes them a muse to poets and a mystery to scientists, who still have much to learn about these aquatic mammals. Their mischievous appearance belies their status as one of Britains top predators. Seamus Heaney, Mary OMalley and Ted Hughes have all devoted elegant doggerel to these creatures. Hughes is taken with the otters “Underwater eyes, an eels. Oil of water body”, the way it “Re-enters the water by melting”. Mr Heaney declares his love for an otters “wet head and smashing crawl/Your fine swimmers back and shoulders/Surfacing and surfacing again.” Ms Darlingtons own lyrical prose is often beautifully evocative: a male otter is “supple as rope made out of silk”; a female swimming underwater moves in a “ripple-wake”; the “thin curves” of a mother and cub “slip together into the twilight, like fierce, muscled ribbons, darkening into the ribbon of the stream.” Despite her sense of romance, Ms Darlington avoids the easy trap of anthropomorphising the otter. Instead she offers a memorable mixture of scientific study and earnest observation. She chronicles the species dramatic decline to near extinction between the 1950s and late 1970s, thanks to hunting for sport, habitat loss and the use of certain pesticides in farming. After a ban on otter hunting and new legal protection in 1978, otters have become an important conservation success story. These creatures can now be found in the wild in every county in England. Otters apparently enjoy a rather illustrious club of fans. Readers of Ms Darlington will be glad she is among them. /201209/199609。
  • Is it something we should be nervous aboutthe worlds second largest economy steaming to storm? Well, you think so Emily. And itdefinitely, its more proved thatChinas been impacted by the globalslowdown we’ve all talked about. For example, we saw the second quarter of GDPcome at 7.6%, that was its weakest level in more than 3 years. And just today,ChinasPMI came in at that 8 months low than you’d mentioned. Now take a look at thenumbers.Chinasofficial Purchasing Managers Index for July, PMI came in as 50.1%. Last monthit came in at this: 50.2%. So we’re not talking about the big drop right. Butthis is a drop nonetheless. The good news is thatChinahas been expanding for all ofthis year at least. Take a look at these, these numbers here. The bad news isthat it’s getting to that all important 50-mark and I raised that becauseanything below 50 indicates contraction. And last summer we saw that was backhere in November. Now still HSs chief economist Qu Hongbin, he was all thatimpressed about todays numbers. This is what he thought aboutChinasJuly data. He said this: This is far from inspiring, asChinas growth slowdown has notbeen reversed meaningfully, and he also added: and downside pressures persistwith external markets continuing to deteriorate. He also added we still alsoexpect Beijingto step up a policy easing in the coming month just support growth andemployment. But of the back of todays PMI data not all, not all that greatstill growing. Beijingdid pledge to keep economic growth stable and did cheering investigators to buyinto the stocks today and has mentioned earlier. The Shanghai Composite andHang Seng did both rise while all the other markets did end in the run. 201210/203968。
