India is a country where tens of millions of people don’t have access to a trained health professional that can give them basic health and wellness advice. The Bangalore-based mobile services company mDhil wants to change that. “India faces a tremendous shortage of doctors,” says Nandu Madhava, the Texas-raised, Harvard-educated social entrepreneur who started mDhil in 2009. “People would turn to quacks and old myths for health information that is rarely grounded in any science. We’re working to alleviate that problem.”“医生极度匮乏是印度面临的一个老大难问题,”南渡o玛达瓦说。 Madhava’s company started as an SMS messaging service where people paid for advice, but the approach failed to scale beyond a subscriber base of about 250,000. Two years ago, Madhava, a 40ish American expat of Indian origin, decided to take a different tack. “With a shift to 3G networks and low cost phones with mobile browsers, we made a strategic decisions to focus on mobile s,” says Madhava, who worked for the Peace Corps and Goldman Sachs before launching mDhil. (Goldman Sachs)。mDhil has since reached 20 million views globally, fueled by a strong preference by people in the developing world—far stronger than in the developed world–for services optimized for mobile devices. “This makes a lot of business sense as most Indians connect to the Internet through their mobile phones,” says Katyayan Gupta, an eBusiness and channel strategy analyst at Forrester Research in New Delhi, India. “In most developing countries, including Brazil or China, Internet companies have to be mobile-first. Sandy Shen, a research director with Gartner in Shanghai, concurs. “Mobile is a top priority for many providers looking for future growth, she says, “and this is an area where lots of innovation is happening.” At present about 65 percent of mDhil’s traffic comes from mobile devices, but that figure is expected to grow to 90 percent in just two years. Since dropping its subscription model, the company leverages its partnership with YouTube and other online channels to make money from advertising, licensing, and sponsorships.mDhil目前约有65%的流量来自移动设备,但在仅仅两年后,这个数字预计就将增长到90%。 “Their main revenue model is to charge for ads and not the consumer,” Gupta says. “This is a common practice. Facebook follows the same approach.”“他们的主要收入来源是广告商,而不是消费者,”古普塔说。 By making the service essentially free at the front end, apart from the cost of Internet access, mDhil has been able to quickly scale to millions of users. It gauges the effectiveness of its advice in a number of ways. “If we create great s, we get more users both in terms of watch time and social media activity,” Madhava says. For example, women felt better informed after watching s on subjects such as puberty, reproductive health, and birth control, according to field studies mDhil performed in conjunction with urban NGOs. It’s of particular importance in India, where long-standing cultural taboos discourage the creation and distribution of high-quality health content in local Indian languages. And as for a developed market where this is less of a factor? mDhil “absolutely” has a chance of being a hit in the ed States, Madhava says. “We’ve started creating health and wellness content with a global audience in mind.” Some of mDhil’s newest online channels receive 80 percent of their viewership from people in the U.S. and Europe, Madhava says. (The subject matter and tone is different from the company’s India-focused content—you can see examples here and here—but Madhava stresses that mDhil’s Bangalore team can produce s for audiences in the developed world for a fraction of what it would cost in the West.) But India sits at the center of Madhava’s mission. “It’s going to take entrepreneurs to help build this country into all that it can be,” he says. /201407/313164A 9-year-old Minneapolis boy was able to get through security and onto a plane at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport without a ticket, an airport spokesman said Sunday. Security officials screened the boy at airport shortly after 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Metropolitan Airports Commission spokesman Patrick Hogan said. The boy then boarded Delta Flight 1651, which left for Las Vegas at 11:15 a.m. The flight was not full, Hogan said, and the flight crew became suspicious mid-flight because the boy was not on their list of unattended minors. The crew contacted Las Vegas police, who met them upon landing and transferred the boy to child protection services, Hogan said. Minneapolis Police went to his residence. Parents told officers they “hadn’t seen much of him today.” “The child was screened along with all other passengers to ensure that he was not a threat to the aircraft,” said the TSA spokesperson. They added that of the boy at the checkpoint has been reviewed, and they are “investigating whether we should reconfigure barriers to prevent another incident like this one.” Video also shows the boy at the airport Wednesday, Hogan said. He grabbed a bag from the carousel and ordered lunch at a restaurant outside of the security checkpoints, Hogan said. He ate and then told the server he had to use the bathroom, left the bag and never returned to pay. The owner of the bag was identified, and the bag was returned to him, Hogan said. Nothing was stolen. The boy became ;violent; and was hospitalized in Las Vegas, where hospital staff reported he was ;uncontrollable; at first but eventually calmed down, it said. A hearing in Las Vegas about the boy#39;s case was scheduled for Tuesday. The boy has been suspended several times at school, most recently since Sept. 21 for fighting, the father said. “He’s not an honor student; he has his ups, he has his downs,” he said, adding he met with the principal and “we put in a plan,” but the son’s misbehavior continued. the boy is known to county staff as a “challenging” child. Since December 2012, the county has four times assessed the boy’s family for protective services. The boy also has a history of riding light-rail trains to a Bloomington water park, where he “waits until a large family is entering and joins them”. Of county interactions with the child, it said, “Typically, staff can tell if a child is lying, but with this child, they are unsure what is going on.” Now, after the boy’s most dramatic wayward act, his father desperately pleaded for help for the son he hasn’t been able to speak to since last week. “He’s a 9-year-old child,” he said. “I don’t want to see my son hurt.”The father said the plane episode has been “a heartache” for the family. “We didn’t know he’d got on a plane until my fiancée called the police … it came back that he was in Las Vegas,” he said. /201310/260385Got a difficult decision to make? Why not mull it over auf deutsch? A new study suggested that people are prone to make more sound, less risky decisions if they are thinking in a language other than their native tongue. The series of experiments, conducted by Boaz Keysar of the University of Chicago, led the scientists to believe that ‘using a foreign language reduces decision-making bias,’ Dr Keysar’s team wrote. Their findings, published in an April 18 Psychological Science study, say that human reasoning is shaped by both systematic, rational ideas, and another that’s emotionally-charged and rapid. The team gathered 54 UC students who knew Spanish as a second language to place bets on a coin toss. Each student was given in dollar bills, and could bet at a time on either heads or tails. If they bet and won, they could win .50, and lost nothing if they did not bet. When they were given the experiment in English, the students acted narrow-mindedly, and took the bet only about half of the time. But when the same students heard instructions in Spanish, they bet 74 per cent of the time. The conclusion, then, these scientists believe, is that thinking in a foreign language distances people from snap emotional decisions, allowing decisions to be more logical. The hope, they wrote, is that people can think in foreign languages to make more prudent financial and economic decisions. /201404/293873

President Xi Jinping appeared at Saturday#39;s state banquet hosted by the Dutch royal family in a formal traditional Chinese suit, which experts say displayed the leader#39;s national pride and confidence in Chinese culture.3月22日,在荷兰王室举行的国宴上,习近平主席身着一套正式的传统中国饰,专家称这一举动展示了国家领导人的国家自豪感和对中国文化的自信力。The eye-catching dark blue suit, slim-cut with a standing collar, is a simplified and redesigned ;Zhongshan suit;, or ;Mao suit; - a typical formal garment for Chinese men. Zhou Jiali, a diplomatic protocol expert from China Foreign Affairs University, said Xi#39;s attire not only meets international diplomatic norms, but also manifests China#39;s ethnic style.;President Xi#39;s outfit at the banquet is not strictly a Zhongshan suit, which normally has four pockets. Instead, it is a type of modified Chinese standing-collar outfit,; Zhou said in an interview with a Chinese newspaper.;The entire design goes with Chinese style, but some subtleties are tinged with a modern tailoring spirit. For example, a Western-style pocket square was designed at the left chest,; she said. Lu Peixin, former acting head of the Protocol Department of the Foreign Ministry, said the decorative color of Xi#39;s suit pockets matched the embroidery color of first lady Peng Liyuan#39;s traditional overcoat.;In addition to exhibiting the beauty of Chinese culture, the outfits of Xi and Peng also create a harmonious and vivid impression of a #39;lovers pack#39;,; Lu said. In the fashion world, the traditional qipao dress portrays a Chinese woman#39;s beauty, and Zhongshan suits represent a man#39;s status. ;Foreigners will interpret the Zhongshan suit as a political symbol because it has typical Chinese connotations,; said associate professor He Yang at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology.;It came out during a period when Western culture entered China in 1920. The Mao suit was a fusion of fashion and culture. It had an outline of a Western suit, but it had Chinese elements,; said Liu Yuanfeng, dean of BIFT. The blue and gray suit was the only choice for Chinese men. It dominated local menswear from 1920 to 1980. That was why many people in the Western world thought China was a ;gray society;, because nearly all the men wore gray Zhongshan suits. Chairman Mao Zedong popularized it, so the garment became known in the West as the ;Mao suit;. After the reform and opening-up in 1978, Chinese people had more choices in clothing, and Western suits became popular. With foreign fashion brands coming into the Chinese market, fewer and fewer local people were interested in the Mao suit and its connotations.1978年改革开放后,中国人民在饰方面有了更多的选择,西式装开始流行。 Even so, there are some older people who still own one or two Mao suits. Chinese leaders, including Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin, continued to wear them on important occasions, such as the nation#39;s anniversary celebrations. BIFT#39;s Liu has seen a revival of the Mao suit over the past few years. He said there are many young designers and local fashion companies that want to popularize it again. When then president Hu Jintao inspected the country#39;s defense forces in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People#39;s Republic of China in 2009, he was wearing a gray Mao suit in Tian#39;anmen Square. The suit he wore has all the characteristic elements of a traditional Mao suit, but was designed in a Western style. It was slim cut in a three-dimensional way - a modern technique in fashion.2009年中华人民共和国建国60周年的庆典上,胡锦涛主席在天安门广场视察国防力量时,穿了件灰色的中山装。 ;It was a redesigned one.
