The Real Final Frontier真正的边界Don: You know what amazes me? Voyager! Voyager!Yaeuml;l: Me too! Did you see the one were seventh of nine gets a face-lift? 你看到被做了大幅度改造的那一期了吗?D: I dont mean that TV show. I mean the real thing—the Voyager spacecraft launched by NASA twenty-six years ago. For years this probe sent back amazing pictures of the outer planets in our solar system before sailing off into space. Now, Voyager is ninety times as far from the sun as we are, and is about to reach the Termination Shock. Y: The Termination Shock? You sure this isnt a sci-fi?极限?你确定这不是在讲科幻故事?D: Not at all. The Termination Shock is one of two proposed boundaries to our solar system. You can say that the solar system ends with Pluto. Astrophysicists, however, think of the solar system as extending farther out to include two less obvious, but just as real, outer edges. One is the Termination Shock, where the charged particles blown out by the sun—and known as the ;solar wind;—slow down abruptly, thanks to the pressure from other charged particles coming from deep space. Beyond that is the edge of the Heliosphere, which is where the solar wind finally ends. The Voyager probe is just now crossing the Termination Shock. In another fifteen years or so it will pass the outer edge of the Heliosphere—a human-made object moving for the first time in history into true interstellar space. Its an awesome thought. 这真的太让人惊叹了!Y: That is cool! /201209/198377

THE Republican majority in the House of Representatives called its budget proposal ;The path to prosperity: A blueprint for American renewal;. Whether it would live up to that billing we will never know, as Democratic opposition in the Senate will prevent it from being enacted. But by recanting on the budget deal they struck with the Democrats last year, and by renewing pledges to slash spending and overhaul popular government programmes, the Republicans have certainly paved the path to partisan rancour and Democratic attack ads. The plan, unveiled on March 20th by Paul Ryan, the chairman of the Budget Committee, is similar to the one he put forward last year. It aims to cut spending by more than trillion over the next decade relative to the budget the president proposed last month. That would bring the deficit to below 2% of GDP by 2015, and the budget into balance by around 2040. The proposal would also dramatically cut taxes for businesses and individuals;a move it claims could be paid for by eliminating exemptions and deductions. It also rehashes Mr Ryanrsquo;s scheme to stop the government paying directly for health care for the elderly via Medicare, and instead hand out that could be used to buy private insurance. But to ease suspicions that this is simply a ruse to foist rising costs on blameless grannies, Mr Ryan now says that the vouchers could be used to remain in a version of the current Medicare programme; this, however, may cost people money if competition from private providers succeeds in undercutting Medicare. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office calculates that the proposed spending cuts are even more swingeing this time round. Only Social Security (the public pension scheme) would remain on its present trajectory. The projected growth in Medicare would be crimped, while outlays on Medicaid, the government health-care scheme for the poor, would be halved as a share of GDP by 2050. Everything else (such as foreign aid, assistance to veterans and federal funding for schools and roads) would be cut by over two-thirds. 2/3。Democrats are delighted that Mr Ryan is returning to the limb he put his party out on last year, when House Republicans overwhelmingly backed his budget proposal only to be lambasted by Democrats for ;ending Medicare as we know it; and prioritising tax cuts for the rich over benefits for the poor. A Democrat who stuck to that script won a by-election in what had long been a safe Republican seat in upstate New York last year. The party has aly launched a similar campaign this year, denouncing the Republicansrsquo; ;Medicare madness;. Republicans, for their part, insist that their forthright stance, in contrast to the Senate Democratsrsquo; failure to pass a budget for the past three years, will earn them respect from voters. Mitt Romney, the probable Republican nominee seems to agree: he has heartily endorsed Mr Ryanrsquo;s approach. Whatever the planrsquo;s electoral merits, it has also set off a more obscure but potentially even more significant battle within Congress. It attempts to unpick the deal sealed last year by the president, the House and the Senate to raise the limit Congress imposes on government debt in exchange for spending cuts. The Republicans are now proposing cutting billion more next year than agreed. They also want to undo part of the fail-safe mechanism that was supposed to induce both parties to compromise on a scheme to reduce the deficit. If no agreement was reached, spending dear to both sides (on defence, in the Republicansrsquo; case, and on almost everything else, in the Democratsrsquo;) was to be cut by .2 trillion. No deal has been reached, but Mr Ryanrsquo;s plan calls for the military cuts (alone) to be restored. The Democrats in charge of the budgeting process in the Senate have aly declared any departure from the debt-ceiling deal unacceptable. But plenty of Republicans in the House feel that Mr Ryan is not going far enough. That sets the stage for another fiscal showdown when the current fiscal year ends on October 1st, a month before elections in which all members of the House, a third of senators and the president all face the voters. 201203/175554

In these days of dieting and weight watching, most people would love to be able to tighten their belt after losing a few kilograms. In times when food and jobs were scarce, however, tightening ones belt was a sign that times were getting worse, and there was simply not enough food to put on the table. As time passed, this physical act of actually tightening ones belt became a symbolic statement, and hence an idiom. This means that today, you can use this expression even if you never wear a belt at all. Now, ;tightening ones belt; simply means that the next few weeks or months or years are going to be more difficult, and we may have to work harder to get less. 201205/180841Books and Arts; Music Review;文艺;音乐;The Aldeburgh World Orchestra奥德伯格世界交响乐团Beach music余音袅袅在海滩120 players from 35 countries have a ball来自35个国家的120名音乐家齐聚一堂开party The musicians who got off the bus all wore the same black hoodies with “Aldeburgh World Orchestra 2012” printed on the back. But the cases they carried were far from uniform. There were pocket-sized boxes for the piccolos, a wheeled-trolley for the harp and knobbly trunks, all barnacled in stickers, for the cellos. The English seaside town of Aldeburgh, the home of Benjamin Britten, is used to welcoming performers from all over the world, but nothing on this scale; a musical Olympiad of 120 players from 35 countries. Through its Britten-Pears young artist programme, Aldeburgh Music has earned a world-class reputation as a centre for the development of musical talent. When the programmes 40th anniversary coincided with Londons Olympic games, Aldeburgh Musics chief executive, Jonathan Reekie, decided the moment had come for Aldeburgh to take a leap ahead and create a “world” orchestra. Most orchestras—even the most international ensembles—recruit largely from Europe and America. The challenge for Mr Reekie and his team in creating the Aldeburgh World Orchestra (AWO) was to seek out 18-29-year-olds and use modern technology to try to make the orchestra truly global. The £700,000m project, which has received public and corporate funding, began three years ago with a call for YouTube submissions. Then Marie Bennell, the AWOs orchestra manager, travelled to Mexico to watch a rehearsal of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas, an important recruiter of regional talent. Patricia da Silva, a Brazilian double-bass player who is no more than five feet tall, stood out for her steady hand and warm personality. The British Council in Egypt called the Cairo Conservatoire, who suggested Marcellino Safwat, a 17-year-old cellist with ambitions to become a conductor. A colleague in Tokyo sent word to China, where YouTube is banned, and old-fashioned demo tapes began to pour in. Over eight weeks Ms Bennell watched and listened to more than 600 submissions. She was determined to put together an ensemble that was capable of taking on a demanding repertoire and producing a unified sound. For that, she needed not just technical ability, but a steeliness of character and a willingness to listen. Players emerged in clusters, often grouped around an outstanding teacher. South Africa produces excellent string players, many of them taught by 82-year-old Jack de Wet (who taught Ms Bennell), and Sophie Cherrier has made France the country to go to for young flautists. Britain dominates the orchestras brass section, inspired by Richard Watkins, the Philharmonias former principal hornplayer, who is now a professor at the Royal Academy of Music. The final selection was truly international: the cello section alone has players from ten countries, including Palestine and South Africa. In Sir Mark Elder, the AWO found exactly the conductor it needed. Fiercely demanding and articulate, he is also “incredibly kind”, Ms Bennell says. He is music director of the Hallé orchestra in Manchester, where he teaches conducting; he has also worked with Britains National Youth Orchestra, and knows from experience that creating an ensemble of young players is an emotional and psychological process that requires a willingness to concentrate and cannot easily be hurried. Some of the less experienced musicians were taught, before they arrived, by professional musicians in Britain whose instructions were relayed by conference. Once in Aldeburgh, each section worked for a week with a specialist before the full rehearsals. A number of them played alongside their pupils in front of the conductor, which, for some, was itself an experience to remember. As Ms da Silva posted on Facebook: “The unthinkable happened today: I played with the principal bassist of the Berlin Philharmonic. I still cant believe it!” 这太让人难以置信了!”It was important, Sir Mark says, “to set the musical bar very high—and then ensure that they get up there.” Setting a high bar meant choosing a demanding repertoire: the strange and ambiguous Fifth Symphony that Dmitri Shostakovich wrote in 1937 when he had fallen out of grace with Stalin and the Communist Party, but was determined to go on composing in Russia, and the Sinfonia da Requiem, with its brilliant brass fanfares and heavy funeral march, that Britten wrote in 1940 as Europe was engulfed in war. These musical responses to the worst that the 20th century could throw at the world had a resonance for many of the players, especially those from troubled parts of Russia, Central Asia and the Middle East. Rehearsing the first movement of the Shostakovich, Sir Mark was determined that the players should plumb the musical depths. “It has to be more powerfully played, more brilliantly played,” he insisted. “It has to feel like a crisis; all the ideas in the music are threatening to explode. It must never feel like café music.” Aldeburgh may be a small seaside town, but there has been nothing small about creating this world orchestra. The Aldeburgh World Orchestra will be performing at the Snape Maltings concert hall near Aldeburgh on July 20th and 22nd, at the Ingolstadt festival in Germany on July 25th, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on July 27th and at the B Proms at Londons Royal Albert Hall on July 29th.7月20号和22号,奥德伯格世界交响乐团将在奥德伯格附近的斯内普马尔廷音乐大厅演出;7月25号,在德国英戈尔施塔特音乐节演出;7月27号,在阿姆斯特丹皇家音乐厅演出;7月29号,在伦敦皇家阿尔伯特音乐厅为B节目演出。201208/193294

Books and Arts; Book Review;文艺;书评;New fiction;Rings of truth新小说;真实的故事Gold. Novels about sport are notoriously hard to pull off. It seems somewhat odd for a literary mind to care how often a ball makes it to the back of the net or how long it takes to sprint down a track. Yet that need not be so. The classic quest narrative—in which an individual overcomes obstacles to achieve a goal—could be a template for any single match or sporting career. “Gold”, Chris Cleaves third novel, is a skilful demonstration of the form. This is the story of Zoe, Kate and Jack, three obsessive race cyclists who meet as young hopefuls. There is bike geekery and Lycra aplenty. As the title suggests, Mr Cleave even dares to set his story around the Olympics, the ultimate sporting circus. Yet this is no niche book for aficionados looking for a brief summer distraction. Instead, cycling is the backdrop for a deeper exploration of the struggle between the physical and the psychological. Into the love triangle and professional exertions Mr Cleave throws eight-year-old Sophie, diagnosed with leukaemia only days before the Olympics and fighting a different type of battle to the finish. At times the book seems slightly sentimental. Sophie and Kate are a little too good to be true; Zoe a bit too deranged and calculating. Yet “Gold” works as a novel because Mr Cleave manages to make the er care about what it takes to win—or even to take part. The small details speak loudly. As the story opens, Zoe stands terrified as 5,000 people chant her name—yet she is equally frightened that one day they may stop. On another occasion she lingers and stares at Kates bike before a race and implants the idea that something could be wrong; she wins the mental advantage, and the quicker start. By such tiny glances and irrecoverable moments lives are changed, a lesson that reaches beyond sport. The moment of winning a gold medal, by contrast, can almost seem disappointing. Mr Cleave knows what makes a good story. Here, his concern is not with macho physicality or crossing a line, but with the endless and enduring human endeavours: love, death and what is left when hopes and dreams are crushed or fulfilled. A book to savour long after the Olympic games are over. 201208/194129

But here, theres none to be found. Coming off these hills is not as easy as I thought. And theres obstacles everywhere you turn. And theres no way Im going to be able to cross this. And thats not the only danger youll face in this wilderness. Ahead are snakes and the most dangerous of all, Australias lethal crocodile. Im in the searing heat and humidity of Australias outback. Water is scarce and the territory is unforgiving. So is this forty-foot drop. This gorge isnt looking too great. Yeah, its probably about forty foot down there. But actually, this tree doesnt look too bad. And if I could just reach that main trunk, I might well be able to just like monkey down it. And actually, there was a hiker a couple of years ago who got lost. And he found himself on the top of a gorge like this since the only way out was to go down the tree. And he went through it. He managed it and he got out. Its a risky climb, so Im roping up just in case. Ive just got to get my legs around this tree trunk.
