When we talk about jobs, its usually do you have one or not. Often overlooked our some of the changing dynamics within the workplace and demographics are playing a key role. A new CareerBuilder survey finds that 43% of all employees are reporting to a boss who is younger than they are. More than half of workers aged 45 and older are in the same position and almost 70% of those 55 plus have a younger boss. Now you may think the nations high unemployment rate is the blame for these budding leaders. However, thats not the case. The latest government data shows that older demographics especially those over 45 have lower unemployment rates than the national average during the past year when the jobless rates bite. Meantime the Americans 25 to 34 years old are dealing with unemployment rates well above the U.S. average and that means the average age of the job force has increased, so the percentage of middle-aged and older people in the work force has increased. Although CareerBuilder found the younger boss, older worker situation doesnt cause significant problems there are some challenges that do crop up frequently. Frustrations can arise when younger bosses are acting entitled when they micromanage, when they favor younger workers or dont give enough direction. CareerBuilder offers some advice for mature workers dealing with these challenges including adapting your communication to fit better with technology and trying not to make assumptions about younger workers. But regardless of who your boss is, keep in mind that you have one. 201206/186190

Business Avon boots out its boss Andreas adieu商业 雅芳把老板给炒了 钟彬娴,再见!An ugly mess at a beauty firm化妆品公司的丑陋乱局;YOU have got to go home tonight, Friday evening, and you have got to fire yourself,; a management coach once told Andrea Jung, the boss of Avon, an American beauty firm. ;The idea was for her to come back to work the following Monday as if starting her job anew. Alas, this brilliant tip was not enough. As Avons share price has wilted like mascara under a sunlamp, Ms Jung is being pushed out for real. On December 13th the firm announced that she will be replaced as chief executive.12月13日,公司宣布钟彬娴将只担任首席执行官一职。The makeover will be gradual. Ms Jung, who has run Avon since 1999, will stay on as chairman and help the board find a new boss. It will be a tough job for anyone. Avon is the worlds biggest direct-seller: an army of cheery salesfolk hawk its products door-to-door. The 125-year-old New York-based company has an annual revenue of over billion and operations in more than 100 countries. But it has stumbled badly of late. Its share price has fallen by 45% this year (see chart). (见图表)Ms Jung had a glossy start at Avon, presiding over six consecutive years of double-digit growth. Yet she failed to use these fat years to invest in the business. By 2005 the firm was looking blemished. Sales declined in major markets. The share price dropped. Ms Jung laid off 25% of senior staff and cut costs everywhere except for advertising and distribution. Avon never really recovered. In March Ms Jung launched the biggest hiring drive in the companys history and nearly doubled the marketing budget. She saw in the global economic crisis a chance to overtake Avons rivals. It didnt work. Moreover, the company has spent more than 0m on an internal investigation of alleged corruption among sales representatives in China and Latin America.Several have been dismissed. Americas Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating, too. If Avon is found guilty of anything, the penalties could be steep. Some problems are beyond Avons control. Brazil, a big market, is slowing down. Europe, which accounts for 28% of Avons sales, is in crisis: its hard to put lipstick on the PIGS. Avon is doing badly at home in America, too. Shoppers are feeling Grinchy about pennies. And the non-beauty products (such as fashion accessories) that account for a hefty third of Avons sales in America have lower margins than cosmetics. (In other countries non-beauty stuff represents only about 10% of Avons sales.) Other problems are self-inflicted. Avon made a mess of its new IT system in Brazil. Its working capital is chewing up a third of its gross cashflow, mainly due to poor inventory management. If Avon reduced its working capital, it would have less trouble paying dividends, says Connie Maneaty of BMO Capital in New York. It would also have more cash for acquisitions in fast-growing markets such as Vietnam or India. Many will be sorry to see Ms Jung tossed overboard. As the Princeton-educated daughter of Chinese immigrants, she embodied the American dream. She was also a role model for women, in particular Avons 6.5m sales representatives, most of whom are female. One reason why Avon wants her to stay as chairman is that she is popular with the salesforce. But Avon is ailing and needs an overhaul. A new boss will be a good start, says Ali Dibadj of Sanford C. Bernstein, a research firm. The list of possible candidates includes Ed Shirley, vice chairman of the beauty and grooming unit at Procter amp; Gamble, an American consumer-goods giant, and Elizabeth Smith, who was in line to succeed Ms Jung at Avon before leaving the company to take over as boss of OSI Restaurant, a restaurant chain. Whoever gets the job, the changes required will be more than cosmetic. /201211/211292

The Japanese car maker announces a global recall of it Prius and Corolla models from certain years. Alex Zolbert reports. Another recall from Toyota, the second one in as many months. It is about 2.8 million vehicles being recalled this time, about 1.5 million here in Japan, more than 650,000 in the US and the remainder of those in Europe. Were still getting details on this. It involves the second generation Prius as well as several different Corolla models. According to Toyota, the problem is with the extension shafts in the steering. They also want to take a look at water pumps in some of the hybrid vehicles. And again, the second recall in as many months, just in October, we had a recall of more than 7 million vehicles. And then if you go back to and 2010, there was a massive recall, more than 8 million vehicles involved in acceleration problems, a very serious problem for Toyota vehicle. So when you added all up going back to , this puts the number, take a listen, its quite staggering: more than 18 million vehicles recalled by Toyota going back to . And Pauline, this doesnt even take into account things like the rising yen, the strong yen that has been hitting Toyota hard as well as the tsunami that hit Toyota hard in March of 2011 in a month that followed another course in the floods in Thailand last year, around this time last year that also hit Toyota. So the company simply cannot catch a break and keep in mind as a car manufacturer, you only get one reputation and this is not doing good things for Toyotas right now. Pauline. Yeah. They are juggling so many challenges right now. And Alex, on the political front, lets talk about politics in Japan. We are hearing that negotiations are in the final stages for Prime Minister Noda to call an election pretty soon. What do you know about this? Yeah, Pauline, this is the other big story that weve been watching all week. Things have been really wrapping up between Prime Minister Noda and the opposition party, the opposition party saying that hes promised to call an election soon. Noda said that he would do it on his own timetable. Late tonight, this is where things stand. Prime Minister is saying that if the opposition LDP Party is willing to make a few more concessions, then he says that he will likely dissolve parliament perhaps by the end of this week. That move will clear the way for the election commission and then set a day for a much anticipated elections. There are several days being thrown around for that again if this all goes according to plan. The date that most people are saying is December 16, but it could move a few days on either Saturday. That is the big story that we continue to watch through tonight and through the rest of the week. 201211/211658

;Give me your tired, your poor...your huddled masses yearning to breathe free... These words, written by American poet Emma Lazarus and inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty, encouraged immigration to America in the early years of the twentieth century. For decades, a steady stream of immigrants arrived and assimilated themselves into American life. But by the mid 1970s, Congress was hearing from Americans who believed they were losing jobs to illegal aliens. Senator Alan Simpson and Representative Romano Mazzoli proposed what came to be known as the Simpson-Mazzoli Immigration Reform and Control Act. It imposed sanctions on employers who hired undocumented aliens, while making allowances for aliens aly living and working in the U.S. Not everyone was in favor of this bill. Some believed it would handle illegal immigrants in an arbitrary fashion, and hurt local businessmen. Others thought it would prove to be too be costly, and in the end, ineffective. The Simpson-Mazzoli bill was ultimately signed into law on November 7, 1986. A delicate compromise, passed after five years of trying, the new law didnt solve the problems of immigration, but alleviated them. Immigration policies that challenge Congress today are even more complex… balancing new security issues with the desire to preserve the diversity and strength that immigrants bring.
