Pronunciation is a funny thing. What pronunciation do you study? In England there are a hundred different accents but textbooks only teach one. What use is that? Actually, English teaching textbooks are pretty bad at teaching pronunciation. Look how many exercises there are – very few. And most of the exercises only teach one tiny point of pronunciation – word stress. And they don’t even show that the stress on a word changes in different sentences. I think pronunciation is very interesting. I wish all teachers used the phonemic symbols in every class. At least students could then improve their pronunciation with their dictionary. The most important thing about pronunciation is intonation, but few teachers teach this. She opened the door and met Maria in the landing place, who, breathless with agitation, cried out--;Oh, my dear Eliza! pray make haste and come into the dining-room, for there is such a sight to be seen! I will not tell you what it is. Make haste, and come down this moment. ;Elizabeth asked questions in vain; Maria would tell her nothing more, and down they ran into the dining-room, which fronted the lane, in quest of this wonder; It was two ladies stopping in a low phaeton at the garden gate.;And is this all?; cried Elizabeth. ;I expected at least that the pigs were got into the garden, and here is nothing but Lady Catherine and her daughter. ;;La! my dear, ; said Maria, quite shocked at the mistake, ;it is not Lady Catherine. The old lady is Mrs. Jenkinson, who lives with them; the other is Miss de Bourgh. Only look at her. She is quite a little creature. Who would have thought that she could be so thin and small?;;She is abominably rude to keep Charlotte out of doors in all this wind. Why does she not come in?;;Oh, Charlotte says she hardly ever does. It is the greatest of favours when Miss de Bourgh comes in. ;;I like her appearance, ; said Elizabeth, struck with other ideas. ;She looks sickly and cross. Yes, she will do for him very well. She will make him a very proper wife. ;Mr. Collins and Charlotte were both standing at the gate in conversation with the ladies; and Sir William, to Elizabeth#39;s high diversion, was stationed in the doorway, in earnest contemplation of the greatness before him, and constantly bowing whenever Miss de Bourgh looked that way.At length there was nothing more to be said; the ladies drove on, and the others returned into the house. Mr. Collins no sooner saw the two girls than he began to congratulate them on their good fortune, which Charlotte explained by letting them know that the whole party was asked to dine at Rosings the next day. Holding hands, Hugo and Kayleen walked all the way around the park. They played soccer with a pine cone. They petted a dog and talked to its owner. When they returned to Kayleen’s apartment, Hugo dug into the plastic bag and pulled out an old clamp-on lamp from his apartment that he hadn’t used for years. “What’s this?” Kayleen asked.“I thought you might like this lamp,” Hugo replied. “Your apartment needs more light. I was going to throw it out, but then I thought you might want it.”“It’s Christmas day, and you’re bringing me a used lamp? A used lamp that doesn’t even have a bulb in it?! Is that the best thing you could come up with on Christmas day? Look here, you didn’t even bother to clean this thing before bringing it into my house!” Indeed, Hugo had missed a couple of spots on the lamp where dust had accumulated. Jeez, Hugo muttered to her, if she didn’t like it, he’d take it home.“No,” she ordered. “Give it to me.” Feeling better, he gave it to her. She opened the door and threw it outside. “All you can give me on Christmas day is second-hand crap?! That’s all I’m worth to you? Get out of here, and take your bag of garbage with you, Santa Claus!” Article/201105/138414

PART THREE - A YOUNG WOMAN AT THORNFIELDCHAPTER SIXTEENThe Wedding"Is that all you want to know?! All right, I shall have to tell you, but you might be angry with me, Jane--just like last night! I pretended to love Miss Ingram to make you jealous. I want you to love me as much as I loved you.""But didn't you care about poor Miss Ingram's feelings?""[-----1-----]. Were you jealous, Jane?""Never mind, Mr. Rochester." I have one more thing to ask you. Please explain everything to Mr. Fairfax. She was so surprised last night when she saw us! PART FIVE - THE NEXT MRS. ROCHESTERCHAPTER TWENTY-FOURA Surprise at ThornfieldIn the morning, I told Diana and Mary that I had to go on a journey, and that I would be gone for a few days. They did not know the reason for my trip, but they did not ask me questions. After a day and a half of traveling, I arrived at the village near Thornfield. I ran across the field, thinking that in a few minutes, I would see the man I loved. "He might be walking in the gardens, and I could surprise him!" I thought. But [-----1-----]! Thornfield Hall was nothing but a burned mountain of stones. Everything was quiet. This was why no one at Thornfield has answered my letters! There had been a terrible fire. "Is anyone hurt...or dead?" I cried out as I began to run back to the village. I had to find someone who could tell me what had happened. In the village, I stopped at a hotel and asked."Well, Miss," the owner said, "One of Mr. Rochester's old servants is a good friend of mine. They told me everything! I can tell you it was that Bertha Mason who started the fire, in the room that used to belong to the governess! Yousee, Rochester was in love with this girl, [-----2-----]. When she left, he almost went mad himself. His wife knew about the girl and was very jealous. "When the fire began, Rochester put his life in danger, helping everyone leave the house. Then he bravely went back to save his wife, but she jumped out of a window and killed herselfQ But because he tried to save her, he was hurt badly in the fire. He lost one hand, and he is blind now. Chickens are so important to many of us because they are a major part of our diet. Every country has so many chicken dishes, and eggs are one of the most common foods around. Chickens are also cute. Well, chickens aren’t, but chicks are - cute, fluffy chicks that make everyone go ‘aaahh’. It’s strange though that the word ‘chicken’ is used in so many English idioms. When I was at high school, you couldn’t ‘chicken out’ – to not do something because of being scared. Things are different today - I’m no spring chicken (that means I’m no longer young) so no one calls me a chicken any more. I work now - as a teacher. I get chicken feed (low wages) but I like my job. I plan to retire before I’m 50, but I’m not going to count my chickens before they’re hatched. This means I won’t quit working until I have enough money. Article/201104/130968
